Burlington Bees News Release
The howling wind played tricks with the Burlington Bees (9-13) on Wednesday night, allowing the Fort Wayne TinCaps (15-10) to escape Community Field with a 6-5 victory.
The Bees and TinCaps went back and forth on Wednesday night, but the Tincaps had the last say, scoring a run in the ninth inning to break a 5-5 tie and pick up the first win in the three-game series.
With one out, Alberth Martinez popped a ball up to shallow left field off of Brandon Efferson (1-2). Wendell Soto tried to get underneath the ball, but the wind blew it from left field all the way to behind second base. Martinez was running the entire way and ended up at second with a double. One batter later, Max Tissenbaum hit a soft roller towards third base. Michael Bolaski had the ball go under his glove, allowing Tissenbaum to take off for third. Soto tried to get Tissenbaum advancing, but overthrew Bolaski, allowing Martinez to score the go-ahead run.
Anthony Bemboon led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk, but Chris Dunn retired the next three batters to pick up his second save and hand the Bees a loss.
Burlington got on the board in the first with two runs, one of which was earned against Joe Ross. Bemboom reached on a one-out single and advanced to third on a single by Sherman Johnson. With runners at the corners, Wade Hinkle hit a ground ball to second that should have been a double play, but it went under the glove of Tissenbaum. Bemboom scored on the play and the next batter was Michael Bolaski, who brought home Johnson on a sacrifice fly.
The TinCaps took a 3-2 lead with three runs in the fourth against Aaron Newcomb. Newcomb allowed the first three men to reach, with Martinez leading off the inning with a home run, Tissenbaum smacking a single and Dane Phillips belting a double. Two men were on for Gabriel Quintana, who brought home Tissenbaum on a ground out. Two batters later, Corey Adamson singled home Phillips.
Bolaski led off the fourth with a walk and scored on a two-out single by Brennan Gowens. However, the TinCaps quickly took the lead back, getting two runs in the sixth on a RBI triple from Luis Tejada and a sacrifice fly by Adamson to make it a 5-3 game.
Burlington got one run in the seventh on a RBI single by Bemboom that scored Wendell Soto, who had tripled to start the inning.
In the eighth, Andrew Ray singled off of Genison Reyes (3-1) with two outs and advanced to second on a walk to Gowens. Pedro Toribio came in to pinch-run for Ray at second, and the move paid major dividends, as Toribio scored all the way from second on a ground ball by Soto that was bobbled behind second base by Stephen Carmon.
Burlington will take on Fort Wayne in the second game of the series on Thursday morning at 11:30 a.m. Ryan Crowley will take on Max Fried.
