May 1, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The Kernels winning streak came to end on Wednesday night with a 7-2 loss to the West Michigan Whitecaps at Fifth Third Ballpark. Cedar Rapids had won their previous nine games, but the Whitecaps used a 5-run 7th inning for the win.
Back to back RBI sacrifice flies by Jorge Polanco and Dalton Hicks gave the Kernels a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning. Byron Buxton and Niko Goodrum, who had both reached to begin the inning, scored. It looked like another offensive outburst for the Kernels, but they didn't score again and totaled only 5 hits on the night. The Kernels went 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position.
West Michigan got on the board in the 2nd inning when a Lance Durham leadoff double led to a run and cut the Kernels lead to 2-1. The Whitecaps then tied the game 2-2 in the 5th inning when Austin Schotts singled and later scored on a passed ball by Kernels catcher Tyler Grimes.
The Whitecaps sent 12 men to the plate in the 7th inning to take the 7-2 lead. Austin Scotts smacked a 2- run home run to put West Michigan up 4-2. Two batters later, Jake Stewart's solo home run extended the Whitecaps lead to 5-2. Back to back walks followed, and both runners scored. Lance Durham's RBI single plated Devon Travis. Jeff Holm scored on Bennett Pickar's opposite-field RBI single.
Brett Lee (2-1) suffered a defeat for the first time this season as he went 6 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned). Lee issued 8 hits while striking out 2 and walking 1. Tim Atherton allowed 3 runs over 1 inning worked. Josh Burris pitched 1 scoreless inning.
Hudson Randall started for West Michigan and allowed only 2 runs on 3 hits in 6 innings. He struck out 3 and walked 3. Brennan Smith (2-0) pitched the final 3 innings for the win, allowing 0 runs on 2 hits.
