Dayton Dragons News Release

Clinton, Iowa-Seth Mejias-Brean drove in four runs and Junior Arias collected three hits including a two-run home run as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Clinton Lumber Kings 11-7 on Wednesday night in the opener to a three-game series. The Dragons matched their season-high for runs in a game with the win as they collected six extra base hits to improve to 9-17. Clinton fell to 11-13.

Clinton scored three runs in the third inning to break a scoreless tie, but the Dragons responded in a big way. They scored three runs in the top of the fourth to tie it, and then added four more in the fifth to take the lead.

In the third, the Dragons took advantage of a Clinton error that led to two unearned runs, and Zach Vincej delivered a two-out, game-tying RBI single to make it 3-3. Mejias-Brean drilled a three-run double in the fourth to key a four-run inning as the Dragons jumped out to a 7-3 lead.

After Clinton scored one run in the sixth, Arias connected on a long two-run home run in the seventh to make it 9-4. It was Arias' fourth home run of the season. Clinton answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull back within three at 9-6.

The Dragons scored in the eighth when Vincej doubled and eventually scored on Beau Amaral's sacrifice fly to make it 10-6 before Clinton scored again in the bottom of the inning to again pull within three at 10-7. But the Dragons scored again in the ninth when Joe Hudson doubled and scored on Arias' triple to make it 11-7. Arias nearly pulled off an inside-the-park home run on the ball off the center field fence but he was tagged out at the plate after an effective relay. Clinton collected two hits in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run in the on deck circle when Amaral made a lunging, tumbling catch of a line drive to left field off the bat of Jordy Lara to end the game.

The Dragons finished with 11 hits. Arias was 3 for 5 with three RBI. Vincej was 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI. Hudson had one hit and scored three runs. Mejias-Brean was 1 for 3 with four runs batted in.

Dragons starting pitcher Robert Stephenson (1-3) worked the first five innings to earn the win. He allowed five hits and four runs with four walks and four strikeouts. Wes Mugarian replaced Stephenson and tossed one and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and two runs with a walk and a strikeout. Ben Klimesh pitched one and one-third innings, allowing two hits and a run. Sean Lucas tossed a scoreless ninth, allowing two hits with a strikeout.

The Dragons defense was a big factor in the win. They turned two nifty 6-4-3 double plays in the sixth and seventh innings. Nick O'Shea made a great diving catch at first base in the eighth, and Amaral's outstanding play in left ended the game.

The Dragons and Lumber Kings continue the series with game two on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. EDT. Ismael Guillon (0-3, 8.64) will start for Dayton against Clinton's Matt Anderson (0-2, 7.36). The next home game is Wednesday, May 8 vs. Lansing. All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at daytondragons.com and wone.com.
