Sixth Inning Surge Helps Beach Bums Win

AVON, OH-The Traverse City Beach Bums struck for five runs in the fifth inning, and the pitching staff threw another solid ballgame as they won their second straight game of a three-game series on Tuesday with a 7-1 victory over the Lake Erie Crushers in front of 1,797 fans at All Pro Freight Stadium.

Traverse City opened the scoring in the first inning when first baseman Chase Burch lined an RBI-single to center field, scoring left fielder J.T. Hall to make it 1-0.

With the Beach Bums leading it 2-0 in the third, Lake Erie got an RBI-single from shortstop Andrew Davis to draw the Crushers within a run, making the score 2-1.

With the Beach Bums leading 2-1 in the sixth inning, Traverse City exploded for five runs thanks to RBI-singles from designated hitter Evan Sharpley and catcher Nate Peterson. The base hit was Peterson's first as a Beach Bum after being signed earlier in the week. With two outs, Traverse City right fielder Matt Brown lined a three-run double down the right-field line to give the Beach Bums a 7-1 lead.

Traverse City starting pitcher Spencer Shelton (1-2) pitched five innings allowing a single run to record his first win of the season. Relief pitcher Justin Anderson worked 3.2 scoreless innings before he was relieved by pitcher Scott Mueller, who recorded the final out of the ballgame when he struck out Crushers second baseman Zac Messer swinging. Lake Erie starting pitcher Paul Fagan (0-4) pitched 5.1 innings and allowed six runs in suffering the loss for the Crushers, his fourth of 2011.

The Beach Bums improve to 10-13 with the win, while the Crushers fall to 7-16 on the season.

The Beach Bums will go for the three-game sweep against the Crushers in the third and final game of this series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Wayde Kitchens makes his first the start for the Beach Bums.
