Pitching Leads Beach Bums in 7-1 Win

AVON, OH - The Traverse City Beach Bums took advantage of a great performance from their pitching staff as they won the first game of their three-game series on Monday with a 7-1 victory over the Lake Erie Crushers in front of 2,536 fans at All Pro Freight Stadium.

Traverse City opened the scoring with the three-run second inning, highlighted by a two-run double from second baseman James Guerrero to make it 3-0.

With the Beach Bums leading 3-1 in the eighth inning, Traverse City added four more runs thanks to an RBI-single from first baseman Chase Burch and a two-run home run from designated hitter Evan Sharpley to give the Beach Bums a 7-1 lead. The home run was Sharpley's second home run of the season.

Traverse City got a solid performance from starting pitcher Bryan Banes (2-0) who pitched six innings allowing a run to record his second win of the season. Relief pitchers D.J. Johnson and Scott Reid combined to pitch a scoreless three innings to finish the ballgame. Lake Erie starting pitcher Josh Roberts (2-3) pitched seven innings and allowed three runs in suffering the loss for the Crushers, his third of 2011.

The Beach Bums improve to 9-13 with the win, while the Crushers fall to 7-15 on the season.

The Beach Bums-Crushers series continues with game two of this three game series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Spencer Shelton gets the start for the Beach Bums.
