Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, IL - Frank Martinez hit a two-run homer to break a 5-5 tie and the Normal Cornbelters held on for a 7-6 win in 11 innings against the Gateway Grizzlies at GCS Ballpark on Tuesday night. The loss for the Grizzlies was their fourth in a row.
The Grizzlies led 5-2 going into the ninth inning before Normal rallied for three runs off of Grizzlies closer Jake Shafer. Colin Moro blasted a two-run homer while Daniel Cox drove in the game-tying run on a single.
Down 7-5 heading into the bottom of the 11th, Ryan Khoury walked to start the inning for Gateway and Logan Parker followed with an RBI double. Parker reached third on the throw home and was left standing there for the next three outs.
The Grizzlies (12-11) recorded a big second inning, notching four runs on three hits. With the bases loaded and no one out, Brandon Peters ripped a two-run double to right field to give the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead. Peters would come around to score later in the inning on a Khoury two-run single. Peters finished the night 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.
Grizzlies starter B.J. Dail gave up his first run in the fifth. Colin Moro walked and Mike Mobbs, a rookie from Fordham University, homered to right field for the Cornbelters (13-10) to cut the Grizzlies lead in half and make it 4-2.
Peters added a run for the Grizzlies in the eighth on a single that scored Landon Hernandez to make the score 5-2 in favor of the Grizzlies.
Dail got the no decision despite an outstanding performance. The 23-year-old from Raleigh N.C. surrendered just two runs on seven hits in seven innings.
The Grizzlies conclude their three-game series with Normal on Wednesday morning at 11:35. The Grizzlies will send rookie right-hander Josh Davis (1-2) to the mound.
Grizzlies notes: The Grizzlies have some exciting discounts and promotions for their six game home stand. Wednesday is a field trip day presented by the St. Louis Science Center with an 11:35 start time. Thursday is Bark in the Park presented by Olsen Veterinary Clinic. Friday features the 50,000 penny drop and Sand Bucket Giveaway presented by GCS Federal Credit Union (Kids 12 years of age and under). In Saturday's home stand finale, it's the Big Screen TV Dig presented by American TV and play catch with dad on the field.
