Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio - The Traverse City Beach Bums used a five run sixth inning to pull away in a 6-1 victory over the Lake Erie Crushers at All Pro Freight Stadium on Tuesday night, sending the Crushers to their sixth consecutive loss.
The Crushers (7-16) have now lost 10 of their last 11 games, while the Beach Bums (10-13) have now won seven out of their last eight at All Pro Freight Stadium.
J.T. Hall reached on a fielder's choice in the top of the first inning, and stole second base before scoring on Chase Burch's two-out single. A Lake Erie error allowed the Beach Bums to take a 2-0 lead in the third. With Hall on first base, a weakly hit groundball off the bat of Birch went up the first base line, and Paul Fagan's errant throw to first base ended up in right field, allowing Hall to score again.
The Crushers plated their lone run of the contest in the bottom of the third. Patrick Norris reached on a one out walk, and came around to score on Andrew Davis's two-out single to bring the Crushers within a run (2-1).
The Beach Bums sent all nine batters to the plate in the sixth inning, and pulled away after scoring five runs on four hits. Evan Sharpley and Nate Peterson brought in the first two runs on back-to-back RBI singles, and Matt Brown delivered the knockout punch with a three-run double down the right field line.
Fagan (0-4) allowed six runs, five earned on six hits over five and a third, and suffered the loss. Spencer Sheldon (1-2) was able to score the victory, despite walking three batters in five innings of work. He allowed just a run on four hits and struck out two.
Eight batters reach safely for the Crushers on the night, including Joel Collins who reached four times, going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and two walks. Nick Mahin walked twice, and has now reached in nine consecutive games.
The Crushers made a few roster moves before the game. They released outfielder Felix Martinez, right handed pitcher Andrew Berger and left handed pitcher Brad Mountain. The Crushers also signed a pair of pitchers, right hander Jairo Cuevas and lefty Randy Sturgill.
The Crushers will finish their three game series with the Traverse City Beach Bums at All Pro Freight Stadium on Wednesday night. Left hander Andrew Weeks (2-2, 4.00) will get the start for the Crushers, and the Beach Bums will counter with right hander Wayde Kitchens (0-0, 0.00) The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
