River City Rascals News Release

O'Fallon, Mo. - River City's offense has been far from potent, but certainly timely, as the Rascals blew a 2-0 first-innings lead in the eighth to the Evansville Otters (5-18) but Danny Sawyer homered with two-outs in the bottom of the frame as River City wins their third-straight with a 3-2 final.

The Rascals (15-8) played solid defense and Zack Sterner (2-0) pitched around trouble most of the night after getting out of a two on, no out situation in the first with a pop-out and a neatly turned double-play ball to end the inning. The defense sparked the offense in the first as River City plated two runs on consecutive single from Stephen Holdren and Chad Maddox to take an early 2-0 lead.

The offense was shut down for the next six innings but Sterner was up to the challenge, pitching around four walks and six hits in 6 2/3 innings allowing a single run in the seventh after a lead-off double.

Zach Robertson (2-0) picked up the final out in the seventh and stayed in to pitch the eighth but gave up a lead-off homerun to Vinnie Scarduzio that tied the game at two before retiring the next three.

With two outs and the bases empty, Sawyer hit a towering shot to left to give River City the 3-2 lead. After leading off the inning with a walk, Kirkland Rivers closed out the ninth inning for his second save in as many chances as the Rascals now look to earn a sweep at home for the second straight series.

Wednesday's game is slated for an 11:05 first pitch with left-hander Mike Anton (0-2, 5.54) set to go for Evansville against the Rascals' Dustin Umberger (0-2, 7.84) making his first start for River City.
