August 16, 2023 - International League (IL)
Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (67-46) moved to a season-high 21 games over the .500 mark with their 10-5 win over the Louisville Bats (60-54), Wednesday at Principal Park.
Iowa got on the board first with a ground out from Jared Young to take a 1-0 lead. Louisville didn't trail for long, as Jason Vosler hit a grand slam in the top of the third to take a 4-1 lead.
The game stayed 4-1 until the fifth, when the I-Cubs used a six-run frame to regain the lead. They scored six runs on doubles from Matt Mervis and Yonathan Perlaza, a sacrifice fly from P.J. Higgins and a two-run home run from Alexander Canario.
As they did last night, Iowa's bullpen kept the Bats off the board, getting scoreless outings from Samuel Reyes and Danis Correa. Already leading 7-4, Iowa got an RBI double from Jake Slaughter and a two-run single from Pete Crow-Armstrong, extending their lead to 10-4.
Louisville pushed a run across in the eighth on an error to make it 10-5, but Cam Sanders recorded the final four outs to earn Iowa their seventh straight win.
POSTGAME NOTES:
Samuel Reyes earned the second win of his Triple-A career, his second win in as many outings. The righty spun 2.1 scoreless frames, walking two batters while striking out two of the nine batters he faced.
Yonathan Perlaza collected four hits, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored, two doubles and an RBI. He now has a league-leading 33 doubles this year with Iowa.
Iowa and Louisville will play game three of their six-game set tomorrow night, with first pitch set for 6:38 pm at Principal Park. You can listen to all Iowa Cubs games on Hope AM940 and stream them for free on the Bally Live App. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
