West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

Frazier goes deep in third straight game

BELOIT, WI - West Michigan rallied from a five run deficit, in large part by scoring six runs in the eighth for an 8-6 victory in Beloit. The Whitecaps have opened a two game lead in the Eastern Division on both South Bend and Southwest Michigan and are seven games ahead of Lansing, which is the next team in line to knock the 'Caps out of playoff position.

Jeff Frazier homered for the third consecutive game. With a home run in his next contest, Frazier would tie the team record most recently achieved by Garth McKinney last season.

Frazier's solo shot to lead off the sixth was the first step of the rally and cut the Beloit lead to 6-2.

Nick McIntyre put the Whitecaps on top in the first inning with his sixth home run of the season.

Beloit came back with two runs in each the first, second and fourth innings to grab a 6-1 advantage. Deacon Burns hit a two-run home run in the first, Paul Rutgers delivered a two-run double in the second and Trevor Plouffe went deep with a two-run shot in the fourth.

All of the runs were against Luke French, who made his first start as a Whitecap. French pitched through the sixth inning.

P. J. Finigan followed with a pair of scoreless innings in relief and picked up his first victory. Kevin Whelan earned the save by throwing a hitless ninth.

During the eighth run rally, Brooks Colvin and Chris Robinson hit back-to-back two-run doubles to erase a four-run deficit. Two batters later, Robinson scored to give the Whitecaps the lead on a double by Clete Thomas.

Thomas raced home from second on an infield hit by McIntyre to complete the rally.

Matt Garza struck out seven in 5.1 innings as the Beloit starter and gave up two runs, but did not earn a decision.

A Pair of Sevens: Beloit pitchers have walked seven batters in each of the first two games of the series.
