Bees deliver another sting to Lugs with 7-1 win

August 3, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING- Damaso Espino went 3-4 with a pair of runs scored and Gary Perez and Brian McFall each knocked in a pair of runs as the Burlington Bees(57-53, 23-17) sent slumping Lansing(54-55, 17-23) to its fourth straight loss and eighth in 11 games with a 7-1 win over the Lugnuts on Wednesday night at Oldsmobile Park.

One night after the Bees scored a pair of runs in the ninth inning and one in the tenth to stun Lansing, Burlington scored at least one run in each of the first five innings to jump out to a 7-0 lead after five innings.

Russ Savickas(5-5) absorbed most of the damage, allowing six runs in 3.1 innings on eight hits to take the loss for Lansing. Only four of the runs ended up being earned as the Lugnuts defense was once again less than stellar.

An error in the first by Eugenio Velez and one by Ryan Klosterman in the third helped lead to a pair of runs. Ed Lucas and Espino each scored a pair of runs in the first three innings and McFall drove home a pair of runs to pace the Bee offense.

In the fifth inning, an RBI fielders choice off the bat of Gary Perez, who also homered in the second inning, drove home McFall to make it 7-0.

Lansing got good bullpen work out of Aaron Tressler, who allowed an earned run in 2.2 innings of relief and Scott Roy allowed just a hit in three shutout frames while striking out four Bees.

Still, the Lugnuts managed little offense against Bees starter Danny Christensen(3-5), who struck out a career high nine hitters in 6.2 innings to earn the win. Christensen allowed eight hits and walked no batters. Eugenio Velez's solo homer in the seventh was the only run allowed by Christensen. It also turned out to be the only run on the night for the Lugnuts as Kraig Schambough hurled 2.1 innings of shutout ball behind Christensen.

Jason Armstrong, Velez and Eric Nielsen each collected a pair of hits in the loss for Lansing, which also hurt itself by stranding eight runners on base.

With the loss, the Lugnuts dropped under .500 on the season for the first time in 2005 and also fell five games behind Southwest Michigan in the chase for the second half wild card berth in the East Division. The Devil Rays rallied to best Cedar Rapids, 8-6.

The Lugnuts will try to avoid losing their season-high fifth straight game tomorrow night as they host Burlington once again. Lefty Chi-Hung Cheng(5-6, 2.88) will get the start for the Lugnuts. The Bees will counter with righty Kyle Crist(9-2, 3.99). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
