Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

BATTLE CREEK, MICH. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays took full advantage of three eighth inning errors in a come-from-behind 8-6 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Wednesday night at C.O. Brown Stadium.

Down 6-2 in the seventh, the Rays used a Heath Anderson RBI double and a run scoring groundout by Fernando Perez to pull within 6-4. Reid Brignac stepped in and appeared to hit one off the scoreboard in left field but was ruled in play. Brignac ended up at third base with a triple, but the would-be home run would've knotted the score at six. As it was, Perez scored to make it 6-5 before the inning ended.

The Kernels came unglued in the eighth as the first two men reached on errors. A third error later in the inning allowed the Rays to make the lead 8-6 as Travis Schlichting recorded an RBI double and Heath Anderson drove home another on a fielder's choice.

Tony Perez took the win for the Devil Rays with two scoreless innings to end the game. He came in relief of Willy Corporan who joined Southwest Michigan from short-season Class A Hudson Valley earlier in the day.

The Devil Rays (22-18, 55-54) will take on Cedar Rapids (18-22, 48-62) in the third game of the series before a Thirsty Thursday crowd on August 4. The alternative Gunship Radio will play in the bar after the game. The game starts at 7:05 p.m. as Brandon Mann will start for the Rays against the Kernels Karl Gelinas.
