Six Homers, Six Scoreless from McGovern Carry Goldeyes Past Saints

ST. PAUL, MN - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (29-24) beat the St. Paul Saints 15-1 at CHS Field on Saturday night.
The 15 runs tied a season-high set on June 20th versus Chicago, and the Goldeyes set new season-highs with 20 hits and six home runs.
The Goldeyes took early control of the game with a five-run top of the first. Wes Darvill lined a single to centre with one out. James Harris followed with a two-run home run into the Goldeyes' bullpen in left field. Two batters later, Willy Garcia doubled off the wall in right and came home with the Goldeyes' third run on Dominic Ficociello's double down the left field line. Reggie Abercrombie capped the inning with a towering, two-run home run to left-centre.
Goldeyes' starting pitcher Kevin McGovern (8-3) escaped a first and third, no-out jam in the bottom of the first inning to protect the early lead. McGovern retired Brady Shoemaker on a line drive to short, won a nine-pitch battle with a strikeout of Josh Allen, and closed the inning when Jeremy Martinez grounded into a fielder's choice. McGovern earned the win with six shutout innings on seven hits. McGovern walked two and struck out seven. McGovern has won five consecutive starts and six consecutive decisions, and is now just six strikeouts back of the Goldeyes' franchise record held by Chris Salamida (435).
Winnipeg stretched the lead to 8-0 with three runs in the top of the third. Kyle Martin singled leading off and went to third when Willy Garcia doubled to left. With the infield in, Ficociello hit a groundball that went through the legs of second baseman Josh Allen. Both Martin and Garcia scored on the error. After Abercrombie singled Ficociello to third, Alex Perez lifted a sacrifice fly to centre.
Tyler Hill and Darvill hit back-to-back solo home runs with two outs in the top of the sixth. Hill had already singled in the top of the second, extending his hitting streak to 14 games.
St. Paul's lone run came on a Shoemaker sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh.
The Goldeyes closed out the night with five runs in the top of the eight against position player Steve Pascual. With two outs and no one on base, Darvill crushed a home run to right for his first career multi-homer game. After Harris singled, Martin unleashed a two-run homer to right that cleared the back fence of the concourse, and landed on the roof of the building adjacent to CHS Field. Winnipeg went on to load the bases, and took a 15-1 lead when Perez hit a two-run bloop single to centre that plated Willy Garcia and Ficociello.
Tyler Garkow earned his first career save after pitching the final three innings of the victory.
Darvill finished the night with five hits to tie a career-high set on May 31st at Sioux Falls. Hill, Harris, Martin, Willy Garcia, Ficociello, and Abercrombie also had multi-hit games.
Dustin Crenshaw (4-4) started for the Saints (34-20) and took the loss, allowing eight runs, six earned, on 10 hits in three innings. Crenshaw walked none and struck out none.
The series concludes Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. Joel Seddon (2-2, 5.93) pitches for Winnipeg. The Saints go with right-hander Ryan Zimmerman (3-1, 3.99). All the action can be heard locally on 93.7 FM CJNU and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
