Saints Roughed up in 15-1 Loss to Goldeyes

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints have played many close games this season, with 10 of their 19 losses coming by one run. Saturday night at CHS Field was not one of those nights. In their worst defeat of the season the Saints gave up a season high six home runs, one shy of the franchise record, losing 15-1 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes in front of 8,767. The loss drops the Saints to 34-20 on the season.

The Goldeyes scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back. With one out Wes Darvill, who had a five-hit night, singled to center. James Harris followed with a two-run homer, his third of the season, making it 2-0. With two outs Willy Garcia doubled and Dominic Ficociello knocked him home with a double down the third base line to increase the lead to 3-0. Reggie Abercrombie came up and hit a two-run homer to left, his fifth of the season to make it 5-0.

The Goldeyes scored three in the third when Kyle Martin led off with a single to center and Willy Garcia doubled him to third. With the infield in, Ficociello hit a grounder that went through the legs of second baseman Josh Allen that scored two runs to make it 7-0. Abercrombie singled to right-center putting runners at the corners and Alex Perez' sac fly made it 8-0. Saints starter Dustin Crenshaw went 3.0 innings allowing eight runs, six earned, on 10 hits.

The lone bright spot on the mound for the Saints was their newest signee, hard throwing rookie right-hander Ryan Smith. He pitched 2.0 perfect innings of relief striking out one.

In the sixth the Goldeyes got back-to-back home runs from Tyler Hill, his third, and Darvill, his first of the night and fifth of the season, to make it 10-0.

The Saints lone run came in the seventh when Matt Morales walked and Dan Motl singled him to second. A fly out by Chris Baker moved both runners up and Brady Shoemaker's sacrifice fly prevented the Saints from being shut out. Shoemaker went 0-3 ending both his 13-game hitting streak and his 31 consecutive games reaching base safely streak.

The Saints utilized position player Steve Pascual to pitch the final two innings and his first one didn't go well. After getting the first two hitters the next seven batters reached. Darvill started it with a solo homer to right, his second of the night and sixth of the season, making it 11-1. Harris singled and Kyle Martin hit a two-run homer, giving the Goldeyes a 13-1 lead. They loaded the bases on a hit by pitch to Willy Garcia and singles from Ficociello and Abercrombie. Perez then knocked home two with a single to finish the scoring.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the three-game series on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Ryan Zimmerman (3-1, 3.99) to the mound against Goldeyes RHP Joel Seddon (2-2, 5.93). It is The Year of the Pig presented by MN Pork and the first 1,500 fans receive a team card set. The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM and seen on KSTC-TV, 45TV.
