
Shorebirds Offense Explodes in 11-7 Win Over Greensboro

Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (27-28, 2-3) scored seven unanswered runs in the sixth and seventh innings to defeat the Greensboro Grasshoppers 11-5 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Monday night. The 11 runs are a new season high for the Shorebirds. The Shorebirds scored nine total runs in their most recent four-game series against Lakewood.
The Shorebirds previous high for runs scored in a game was ten, accomplished on June 6 against West Virginia and April 20 against Augusta.
The Shorebirds scored four unanswered runs over the first three innings. In the first, Michael Mooney and Michael Rooney hit back-to-back singles. After a Ty Kelly walk, Mike Flacco hit a grounder to third to score the first run. In the second, Rooney hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Rosa, who hit a leadoff single. Kelly followed with a single to give the âBirds a 3-0 lead. The Shorebirds added a run to build a 4-0 lead in the third on an opposite field single by Brenden Webb.
Greensboro clawed back in the fourth inning. Brian McConkey, Wilfredo Gimenez and Dan Black each had RBI's to trim the Shorebirds lead to 4-3.
In the fifth, Greensboro took their first lead. Ryan Fisher hit a leadoff triple. Then, Gimenez grounded to short and Rooney threw low to first to score Fisher. Two batters later, Dan Black singled to score Gimenez, which gave Greensboro a 5-4 edge.
The Shorebirds regained the lead in the sixth inning. Mooney was hit by a pitch to open the inning. Then, Rooney doubled to put runners at second and third. Then, two consecutive passed balls against Wilfredo Gimenez scored both Mooney and Rooney to give the âBirds a 6-5 lead.
In the seventh, Michael Ohlman blasted a three-run triple to left-center field on a 3-2 pitch to give the Shorebirds an 11-5 lead.
Scott Copeland picked up the win in six innings. He allowed eight hits and four earned runs. Randy Henry tossed two scoreless innings of relief and D.J. Ferguson got the final three outs in the ninth inning.
The Shorebirds and Grasshoppers play game two of the series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Jacob Pettit is the scheduled starter for the Shorebirds.
