Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds, class "A" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, are pleased to announce that left-handed starter Jarret Martin has been named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 20 through June 26. He is the first Shorebirds pitcher to earn the distinction this season.

Martin tossed a gem against the Lakewood BlueClaws on June 23 to earn the recognition. In six shutout innings, he allowed just one hit. Martin went 5.2 innings without allowing a hit until Carlos Perdomo hit a flare single up the middle to break up the no-hit bid. Martin also fanned eight batters in the start.

The Bakersfield, California native has been excellent in his last two starts. On June 15 against Kannapolis, his last start of the first half, Martin struck out a career best nine batters over seven innings. He allowed just five hits. Over his last two starts, Martin's ERA has dropped from 5.65 to 4.71.

The 18th round selection of the Orioles in 2009 has 17 strikeouts in his last two starts (13 innings).

The South Atlantic League is batting just .219 against Martin this season, tied for the lowest opponents against average on the staff (Randy Henry).

Martin is the third Shorebirds player to earn a weekly award from the South Atlantic League. Manny Machado was named the SAL Player of the Week for the week of April 25 through May 1 while Mike Flacco was named the SAL Player of the Week for the week of May 16 through 22.

Martin and the Shorebirds open a seven-game homestand at Perdue Stadium on June 27 against the Greensboro Grasshoppers. For tickets and information, contact the Delmarva Shorebirds at 410-219-3112.
