Lexington Legends News Release

Cole White's 10th inning home run gave the West Virginia Power a 2-1 win over the Lexington Legends Monday night in Charleston.

The game included a bench-clearing brawl in the eighth inning that resulted in the ejection of four players, two from each team.

West Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Andy Vasquez beat out a grounder to shortstop for an infield hit. Vasquez advanced to second on a wild pitch by Legends' starter Mike Foltynewicz and continued to third when catcher Roberto Pena's throw went into center field for an error. Vasquez scored as Justin Howard grounded out to first baseman Jhonny Medrano.

The Legends were held scoreless until the eighth. Emilio King and Delino DeShields Jr. started the inning with singles, and Enrique Hernandez sacrificed the runners to second and third. After Adam Bailey walked to load the bases, Ben Heath grounded to third baseman Kevin Mort. Mort stepped on third for a force play, but his throw to first was too late to get Heath as King scored the tying run. West Virginia manager Gary Robinson was ejected during an argument about the call at first.

Mike Kvasnicka followed with a single to left field, and Bailey, trying to score from second, was thrown out by White, the left fielder. After a collision at the plate between Bailey and West Virginia catcher Elias Diaz, an exchange of words quickly escalated into shoving and swinging, and both benches emptied. Several players squared off, and more wrestling ensued, but only Bailey, Diaz, Lexington pitcher Brian Streilein and West Virginia pitcher Brooks Pounder were ejected.

The score remained tied 1-1 until the bottom of the 10th, when White hit reliever Jorge DeLeon's first pitch over the fence in left field to give the Power the victory.

Kevin Decker (2-2), who pitched the 10th inning for West Virginia, got the win. DeLeon (1-4) was the losing pitcher. Foltynewicz worked six innings. He struck out eight batters and walked three while allowing only two infield singles and one unearned run. West Virginia starter Zac Fuesser pitched five innings, allowed one hit, struck out four, and did not give up a walk.

The series continues Tuesday at Appalachian Power Park. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
