Charleston RiverDogs News Release

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Nik Turley, Danny Burawa, and Kelvin Perez combined on a three-hit shutout as the Charleston RiverDogs blanked the Augusta GreenJackets, 3-0, in South Atlantic League action Monday night in front of a crowd of 3,860 fans at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Charleston improved to 2-3 in the second half and 28-47 overall with its second straight victory, while Augusta fell to 1-4 and 32-43 overall.

Turley (4-6) and Augusta's Justin Schumer (3-3) were on top of their respective games from the keynote. Each club mustered only one hit through the first three innings, as the contest remained scoreless until the RiverDogs scratched out a run in the top of the fourth inning.

Gary Sanchez was issued a free pass, and crossed to third when Kevin Mahoney continued his hot hitting by roping a double to center field. Schumer recovered to fan Kyle Higashioka, but could not get past Kelvin De Leon, who lined a RBI single up the middle for a 1-0 Charleston lead.

Augusta compiled its best threat against Turley in the fifth, putting two men on with two out for Ehire Adrianza. Adrianza was no match for Turley, though, as the 6-6 left-hander struck out the shortstop to finish 5.0 spotless innings for the fourth consecutive start.

Turley yielded only two hits and a walk while collecting his fifteen outs, seven of which came via the strikeout. He has not allowed an earned run over his last 22 frames.

The RiverDogs threatened in the seventh and eighth innings, but were unable to come up with any insurance runs against Schumer and GreenJackets' reliever Mario Rodriguez.

Higashioka doubled, and Garrison Lassiter singled to put men on the corners with one out in the seventh. Schumer was then able to induce a fly out from Jose Toussen, before Rodriguez entered in relief and retired Eduardo Sosa on a bunt attempt to get out of the frame unscathed.

Schumer turned in one of his better starts of the campaign, striking out a season-high seven batters over 6.2 innings. The Houston, Texas native scattered six hits and two walks while giving up the one run.

Anderson Feliz started the eighth with a single off Rodriguez, and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Ramon Flores. Mahoney delivered a two-out base knock to give Feliz a chance to tally another marker, but Augusta right fielder Ryan Lollis erased Feliz with a perfect throw to the plate.

Danny Burawa recovered from three rocky showings to preserve the 1-0 advantage with three sparkling innings out of the bullpen. Augusta put the tying run in scoring position in both the seventh and eighth innings as well, but could not come up with the timely hit off Burawa.

Brett Bochy emerged out of the GreenJackets' bullpen in the ninth and could not keep the RiverDogs bats down.

Higashioka cracked a leadoff single, and Toussen managed a walk two outs later to keep the inning alive for Sosa. Sosa sent both runners home with a two-run triple over the head of Lollis in right field, extending the Charleston cushion to 3-0.

Kelvin Perez walked the first two hitters he faced in the ninth to bring the tying run to the dish, but displayed his mettle to lock up his seventh save of the year.

The RiverDogs and GreenJackets head back to the diamond on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Zach Nuding (5-4, 4.80 ERA) is expected to toe the slab for Charleston, versus southpaw Gaspar Santiago (1-3, 5.19 ERA) of Augusta.
