Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The All-Star Break ended on Friday for the Augusta GreenJackets but their offense is still lying on a beach somewhere. The GreenJackets were shutout for the second straight night and the seventh time this season in a 3-0 setback at the hands of the Charleston RiverDogs in front of 3,860 at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Monday night.
In their five second-half contests, the GreenJackets have scored a total of ten runs and have recorded just 21 hits over the five games. Charleston starter Nik Turley (4-6) fired five scoreless innings against Augusta, allowing two hits and a walk while equaling a season-high with seven strikeouts.
The RiverDogs got an early run off Justin Schumer in the fourth after Schumer allowed a walk and a double to give Charleston runners at second and third with no one out. After a strikeout of Kyle Higashioka, Kelvin DeLeon's RBI single put the RiverDogs up to a 1-0 lead.
Schumer (3-3) wouldn't be touched up otherwise in the tough-luck loss, allowing just the one run on six hits and a pair of walks. Like Turley, Schumer also set a new season-high with seven strikeouts.
Charleston waited until the ninth to add further insurance. With two outs and runners at second and third, Eduardo Sosa hit a two-strike pitch from Mario Rodriguez over the outstretched glove of right fielder Ryan Lollis to bring home two runs on a triple that gave the RiverDogs a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, the GreenJackets had the tying run come to the plate twice. After Kelvin Perez surrendered back-to-back walks to open the inning, Lollis lined into a double play that appeared to kill the Augusta rally. Perez followed the double play with his third walk of the inning to bring the tying run to the plate once more. However, Devin Harris grounded out to third to end the game and give Perez his seventh save of the year.
The GreenJackets equaled their longest losing streak of the year with the loss and will send Gaspar Santiago (1-3, 5.19) to the mound on Tuesday to try and stop the skid. Charleston counters by sending Zach Nuding (5-4, 4.80) to the mound in the second game of the series. First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
Single-game tickets are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
