STAT OF THE GAME: The Shorebirds have outscored their opponents 68-37 during the ten-game winning streak.
PREVIEW:
The Delmarva Shorebirds aim for their 11th straight win in game three against the Charleston RiverDogs. The Shorebirds used a great pitching performance by Jacob Pettit and a two-run homer by Manny Machado to top the RiverDogs last night, 2-0. The Shorebirds have won 10 straight games, their longest win streak since at least the 2003 season. The Shorebirds are 10-2 this season against the Southern Division. The Shorebirds have gone from 5-9 to 15-9 during the 10-game streak.
MACHADO NAMED SAL POY:
Manny Machado was honored by the South Atlantic League today as the "Player of the Week" for the week of April 25 through May 1. He batted .480 (12-of-25) with five home runs and 12 RBIs. Machado leads the Shorebirds in runs scored (19), doubles (6), home runs (5), RBIs (20), walks (17), on-base percentage (.451) and slugging percentage (.639).
PETTIT GOES THROUGH EIGHT:
Jacob Pettit tossed eight shutout innings last night to earn his third win of the season. He is the first Shorebirds starting pitcher to toss eight innings this season.
TOP THREE HITTERS IN ORGANIZATION:
The Shorebirds have the top three hitters in the entire Baltimore Orioles farm system. Kipp Schutz ranks first (.353), Manny Machado ranks second (.337) and Jonathan Schoop is third (.319).
FIRST SHUTOUT:
Last night marked the first shutout of the 2011 season for the Shorebirds. The RiverDogs managed only six hits.
BEST OFFENSE IN THE SYSTEM BY FAR:
The Shorebirds are hitting .277 as a team this season, tops in the organization. The BaySox are hitting .244, the Tides are hitting .241 and the Keys are batting .237.
SAVES RECORD:
Walters picked up his league leading eighth save of the season last night. Walters ranks tied for second in all of Minor League Baseball with eight saves. Jose Diaz of Bowie and Kevin Whelan of Scranton Wilkes-Barre have nine saves. The Shorebirds franchise record for saves in a single season is 33, held by Derek Brown (1998).
7 STRAIGHT WITH HOMER:
The Shorebirds have hit at least one home run in seven straight games, their longest stretch of the season. They have 11 total homers in the last seven games.
