HICKORY, N.C. (May 2, 2011) - The Kannapolis Intimidators lost in walkoff fashion for the third time in four games, falling to the Hickory Crawdads, 3-2, on Monday night.
Hickory's Christian Villanueva homered off Steven Upchurch with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, coming through with his second walkoff hit of the series against Kannapolis. Upchurch (1-1) took the loss, tossing 2 1/3 innings and allowing one run off two hits with three strikeouts.
Making his first start of the season, RHP Paul Burnside tossed six strong innings for Kannapolis, allowing two unearned runs on two hits while striking out four and walking two.
Burnside walked Andrew Clark and Josh Richmond in the fourth inning, and the duo advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. With two outs, Jhonny Gomez grounded a ball to third base, and 3B Juan Silverio let the ball get through him into left field, scoring Clark and Richmond on a two-run error.
The Crawdads returned the favor in the top of the sixth when Mike Blanke and Dan Black reached on consecutive singles. Both base- runners advanced on Matt Thompson's wild pitch, and Blanke scored on an overthrow from Hickory catcher Tomas Telis to third base, making it 2-1 Hickory.
Silverio redeemed himself in the eighth inning with a two-out RBI- single to cash Brady Shoemaker from second base to tie the game, 2-2.
Hickory's Matt Thompson matched Burnside, allowing no earned runs. Thompson surrended one unearned run on five hits while striking out three and walking two. Reliever Randol Rojas (4-0) earned the win, giving up one run on three hits with three strikeouts.
