DELMARVA, MD. - Scott Copeland hurled 6.2 scoreless innings to back up a Delmarva offense which produced eight two-out runs as the Shorebirds defeated the Charleston RiverDogs, 8-0, in South Atlantic League action Monday night in front of a crowd of 1,440 fans at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

Delmarva improved to 16-9 with its eleventh straight victory, while Charleston was shutout for the second straight night and dropped its fifth in a row to fall to 10-15.

Delmarva capitalized on two Charleston errors with a pair of two-out run-scoring hits to take a 2-0 first inning lead against Zach Nuding (3-1). Kipp Schutz extended his team-leading RBI total to 19 to account for the first score, driving home Jonathan Schoop with a groundball single to left. Schutz came in to tally the second run two batters later, as Tyler Kelly rapped a single through the middle.

Schoop and Schutz got back at it to produce another unearned run for a 3-0 Shorebirds' lead in the second. Schoop ringed a double to left, Manny Machado followed with a walk, and Schutz singled through the originator for his second RBI in as many innings.

Nuding ran into two-out trouble again in the fourth and was forced from the hill as the RiverDogs fell into a 7-0 hole.

After quickly setting down Steven Bumbry and Schoop, Nuding surrendered singles to Machado and Schutz, and hit Michael Flacco, to load the bases. Kelly provided Nuding his parting blow, lacing a line drive to center to plate two for a 5-0 Shorebirds advantage. Mike Recchia was summoned from the Charleston bullpen, but Michael Ohlman piled on, lofting a triple to right field to chase in two more runs.

It was an ugly final line for Nuding, who had won his previous three starts. The 6-4 right-hander yielded seven runs (four earned) on eight hits over 3.2 innings, issuing three free passes and striking out three.

The Shorebirds added yet another two-out run in the fifth to extend the cushion to 8-0. Schoop drilled a ground-rule double to left to continue the inning for the red-hot Machado, who pulled a line drive single to record his 13th RBI in the last nine games.

Copeland (2-0) had a tough act to follow after Jacob Pettit penned 8.0 scoreless frames for Delmarva on Sunday, but the Southern Mississippi product was not too shabby himself. Copeland spun 6.2 unblemished innings, allowing four hits and five walks while fanning seven.

Schutz reached base in all five of his plate appearances to pace the Shorebirds potent attack, going 3-for-3 with with 2 RBI and two runs scored.

The RiverDogs and Shorebirds head back to the diamond for the finale of the four-game series on Tuesday at 10:35 am. Right-hander Shane Greene (1-2, 5.40 ERA) will get the nod for Charleston on getaway day, while left-hander Tim Berry (0-0, 5.17 ERA) is expected to throw for Delmarva.
