Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

LAKEWOOD, NJ - Starter Erik Goeddel tossed six shutout innings to lead the Savannah Sand Gnats to their third straight win, a 3-1 victory over the Lakewood BlueClaws Monday night at FirstEnergy Park. Goeddel struck out a career-high nine batters to earn his first win as a professional.

The Gnats (10-14) scored the game's first run in the top of the second inning. Third baseman Aderlin Rodriguez singled to left field and came in to score on C Blake Forsythe's RBI double to right. The single for Rodriguez extended his hitting streak to nine-straight games, a new Gnats' season-high.

Goeddel made Savannah's lone run stand up through six innings, tying his longest start of the year. He worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the third inning, but then retired ten batters in a row, and did not give up another hit.

Savannah added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings. In the eighth, LF Cory Vaughn doubled and then scored on an error on Lakewood 1B Jim Murphy. In the ninth, RF Javier Rodriguez's solo home run, his fourth of the year, gave the Gnats a 3-0 advantage.

Angel Cuan relieved Goeddel, working around Gnats errors in the seventh and eighth inning before running into trouble in the ninth, when the BlueClaws (10-14) scored their only run. Lakewood C Jeff Lanning began the inning with a double. A single from 1B Jim Murphy brought the tying run to the plate for Lakewood. RF Anthony Hewitt then followed with a single into right field to score Lanning and put the tying runs on base with the score 3-1. At that point, the Gnats turned to Ronny Morla to shut down the Blueclaws rally. The first batter Morla faced, 3B Stephen Batts, sacrificed the runners to second and third. Morla then struck out the #8 and #9 hitters in the Lakewood batting order, CF Aaron Altherr and pinch-hitter Alan Schoenberger for his second save in as many nights.

The Gnats will be looking for the four-game sweep in Lakewood when they hand the ball to RHP Gonzalez Germen (1-1, 5.68) Tuesday against RHP Garrett Claypool (0-1, 2.00). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm. The radio broadcast on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com will begin at 6:30 pm.
