Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (16-9) shutout the Charleston RiverDogs for a second consecutive night, 8-0, to win their 11th straight game on Monday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds have not lost a game since April 20 when they fell to Augusta 11-10 in ten innings. The Shorebirds have not allowed a run in 20 consecutive innings dating back to the eighth inning on April 30.
All eight of the Shorebirds runs were scored with two outs on the board.
In the first, the RiverDogs committed two errors to help the 'Birds plate two runs. Both Steve Bumbry and Jonathan Schoop reached on errors. Then, Kipp Schutz singled through the left side to score Bumbry. Two batters later, Ty Kelly singled up the middle to give the Shorebirds a 2-0 lead.
The Shorebirds added another run in the second. With two outs, Charleston catcher Gary Sanchez missed a pop fly in foul ground. On the next pitch, Schoop hit a double to left field. After a walk to Manny Machado, Schutz singled to give the 'Birds a 3-0 lead.
The game was blown wide open in the fourth inning. With two outs, Machado and Schutz hit back-to-back singles. After Mike Flacco was hit by a pitch, Ty Kelly ripped a two-run single up the middle to pad the lead to 5-0. Then, Michael Ohlman tripled to the right field corner to increase the lead to 7-0.
The Shorebirds added one more run in the fifth on a Machado RBI single, his 21st of the season.
Scott Copeland became the eighth straight Shorebirds starter to go past the fifth inning. He went 6.2 innings and allowed four hits and no runs to earn his second win of the season.
Ryan Palsha and Brandon Holloway shut down the RiverDogs over the eighth and ninth innings.
Paced by three-hit games for Schoop and Schutz, the Shorebirds finished with 12 total hits.
