Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - For the second game in a row the Lakewood BlueClaws got the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the 9th, and for the second game in a row Savannah RP Ronny Morla got the out he needed to pick up a save and preserve the win, this time by a final score of 3-1. The Sand Gnats have now won 3 games in a row after losing 7 straight games, and will go for the sweep in the final game of the 4 game series Tuesday night.
Jesse Biddle (0-4) got the start for the BlueClaws, and pitched very well. He went 5 strong innings, allowed just 1 run on 4 hits, 2 walks, and struck out 4. Lakewood was just unable to give him any run support as they were held scoreless until the bottom of the 9th. Savannah's Starting Pitcher Erik Goeddel (1-1) pitched 6 shutout innings, gave up just 3 hits and struck out 9 en route to his first win of the season. Tyler Knigge and Eric Pettis each pitched 2 innings in relief for Lakewood.
In the 9th inning, C Jeff Lanning led things off against LHP Angel Cuan with a double to Center Field for the BlueClaws. Then 1B Jim Murphy singled to put runners on the corners with nobody out for the red hot Anthony Hewitt. Hewitt, who extended his hitting streak to 13 games, then singled to score Lanning and move Murphy to 2nd with nobody out. Ronny Morla came into the game and relieved Angel Cuan after Hewitt's RBI single. With the game 3-1 and nobody out, Stephen Batts sacrificed the runners up 90 feet to put men on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Ronny Morla then struck out Aaron Altherr and Alan Schoenberger to end the game and pick up his 3rd save of the season.
Tuesday the BlueClaws will try to snap their 2 game losing streak and avoid getting swept by Savannah. Lakewood will send RHP Garett Claypool (0-1, 2.00 ERA) to the mound, and Savannah will counter with RHP Gonzalez German (1-1, 5.68 ERA). First Pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm at FirstEnergy Park.
