Power Sweep Doubleheader

The West Virginia Power swept a doubleheader with the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Monday night at Appalachian Power Park, winning 3-0 and 3-2. The Power have won the first three games of the series and look to close out their first sweep of the season on Tuesday.

West Virginia sent Jameson Taillon to the hill in game one, and the 19 year-old pitched four shutout innings in his second professional appearance. Taillon, the second overall selection in the 2010 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates, only allowed two hits and struck out six, but did not factor in the decision.

The Power offense came in the third an fourth innings. Justin Howard scored the first run on a Mel Rojas Jr. sacrifice fly in the third, and Howard drove in the other two with a double in the fourth.

Casey Sadler (1-0) pitched the final three innings for the win, surrendering just one base hit along the way. Robert Morey (2-3) was saddled with the loss after allowing all three runs for Greensboro.

In game two, Brandon Cumpton pitched four shutout innings before the Grasshoppers could crack the scoreboard, and was pitching with a 3-0 lead into the fifth. Andy Vasquez, Rojas Jr., and Elias Diaz drove in the West Virginia runs to back Cumpton.

Greensboro plated a run in the top of the fifth against Cumpton on a sac fly, and rallied in the seventh against reliever Trent Stevenson. With a 3-1 Power lead, Stevenson allowed four consecutive base hits, including a single by Dan Black to cut the Power lead to one. With the bases loaded and no one out, Stevenson struck out Isaac Galloway swinging, Ryan Fisher swinging, and Christian Yelich looking to end the game.

Cumpton (1-3) gained the win in a spot start, while 'Hoppers game two starter JheysonManzuata (0-2) took the loss. Stevenson earned his first save of the year.

The Power and Grasshoppers will conclude this series on Tuesday evening at 7:05 pm at Appalachian

Power Park. Colton Cain is slated to start for West Virginia against Greensboro's Zach Neal.
