Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Charleston, SC - The Delmarva Shorebirds fell just short in their series finale against Charleston. The RiverDogs earned the series win with a 4-3 victory on Monday evening. The Shorebirds conclude their Southern road trip on a three-game losing streak.
Looking to earn a series split, Delmarva took an early lead. In the third inning, Federico Castagnini doubled to apply the first pressure to RiverDogs' starter Brady Lail. Josh Hart drove home the game's first run on an infield single that deflected off Lail's glove. Castagnini scored again in the fifth inning when Mike Yastrzemski belted an RBI double to deep right-center.
Leading 2-0, Delmarva was in a good position with ace Hunter Harvey on the mound. The game turned in the bottom of the fifth when Charleston scored four runs on just one hit. Harvey hit John Murphy and then walked Kale Sumner to start the inning.
Gosuke Katoh laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Harvey lost the ball as he went to throw to first base. After the error, Harvey buckled down for a strikeout with the bases loaded. The next batter, Abiatal Avelino, chopped a grounder to third, but Drew Dosch's throw home bounced low and Austin Wynns could not scoop it out. The second error of the inning allowed Charleston's first run to score.
The tough luck continued for Hunter Harvey when a swinging strike three to Tyler Wade skipped away from Wynns, allowing the tying run to score on a wild pitch. Aaron Judge then delivered the first hit of the inning, a two-run single to right field. Charleston led 4-2 after scoring four runs on one hit, a walk, a hit-by-pitch and two errors.
The Shorebirds tried to scratch their way back into the game, but they fell one play short. Delmarva scored in the seventh inning on an RBI groundout by Josh Hart. Then, the Shorebirds stranded the tying run on third base later in the same inning. Delmarva again left the tying run in scoring position in the ninth inning.
Brady Lail recorded his fourth win of the season for Charleston, while Hunter Harvey suffered his second straight defeat. Nick Rumblelow finished the RiverDogs' victory, taking home his fifth save.
Delmarva will travel back to Salisbury before starting a seven-game homestand on Wednesday. The Shorebirds open with left-hander Steven Brault (2-2, 3.21) against Augusta GreenJackets' lefty Luis Ysla (0-1, 4.50). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Perdue Stadium on Wednesday evening.
