Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats defeated the Rome Braves 5-1 Monday night to complete a 6-1 homestand. Savannah pitching allowed two runs or fewer in all six wins.

The Gnats (20-9) broke a 1-1 tie with a four-run sixth inning. LF Stefan Sabol, 1B Dominic Smith and DH Jon Leroux all walked. Sabol scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by reliever Tyler Brosius. C Jeff Glenn singled home an insurance run with a line drive to left field. The final two runs scored on SS Gavin Cecchini's chopper under the glove of Braves' third baseman Carlos Franco.

The Braves (9-22) scored the game's first run in the top of the second inning. The unearned run was the only one Savannah starter Kevin McGowan allowed all evening. He finished 5.2 innings, walked four and struck out five.

Savannah tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Sabol led off with a homerun against Brosius.

Starter Kevin McGowan left with the game tied 1-1, two outs and the bases loaded in the sixth. Savannah reliever Akeel Morris induced a fly ball to end the threat and keep the game tied. He earned the win for his 1.2 innings of relief.

Cecchini's third inning double extended his hitting streak to eight games.

The Gnats are off on Tuesday, and begin a seven game road trip in West Virginia on Wednesday. Follow all of the action live on News/Talk 630, sandgnats.com and the MiLB First Pitch App.
