Greenville Drive News Release
Augusta, GA - One night after pounding out 18 hits, the Greenville Drive (16-12) offense proved they still had plenty more to go around. Thanks to a 15-hit night, the Drive cruised to a 13-3 win over the Augusta GreenJackets (15-16) on Monday. With the victory, the Drive came back to split the four-game series after dropping the first two contests.
Trailing 2-1 in the top of the fourth, the Drive scored a pair of runs to take the lead. Wendell Rijo cranked an RBI triple to left field to tie the game, and Jimmy Rider plated Rijo two batters later with an infield single.
The Drive didn't look back from there, as three big innings in a row pushed their lead completely out of reach. A four-run fifth chased Augusta starter Chase Johnson (1-3) from the game, as a wild pitch scored a run, a Rider double to center drove home two, and Kendrick Perkins' RBI single made the score 7-2.
Augusta scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 7-3, but the Drive countered with a trio of runs in the sixth as Witte doubled home a run, Rijo singled home another and Jordan Weems brought in a run with a groundout.
Witte continued his assault on Augusta pitching in the seventh, as his RBI double made the score 11-3. A GreenJacket wild pitch scored a second run in the frame, and Carlos Asuaje capped things off with a sacrifice fly.
The offensive outburst overshadowed a terrific effort on the mound by a pair of Greenville hurlers. Teddy Stankiewicz improved to 4-2 with six innings of work, giving up 10 hits and three runs while striking out seven and not walking a batter. Jacob Dahlstrand finished the game with three scoreless innings and recorded his second save.
Leading the Drive offense was Witte, who finished the evening 3-4 with three RBI and four runs. He went 8-17 with seven RBI in the four-game series, and all eight of his hits went for extra bases. Perkins picked up three hits as well. Rider went 2-4 with three RBI, and Rijo and Bo Greenwell also collected two hits each.
Brandon Bednar led the Augusta offense with three hits, and Tyler Horan, Ryder Jones and Leonardo Rojas added two hits apiece.
After a day off, the Drive will return home on Wednesday to begin a three-game series with the Greensboro Grasshoppers, affiliate of the Miami Marlins. First pitch is set for 7:05. RH Mario Alcantara (1-1, 6.10) will take the mound for the Drive, and RH Max Garner (2-2, 4.35) gets the start for Greensboro.
