Suns Take Series with Legends with 6-5 Win

HAGERSTOWN, M.D. - The Hagerstown Suns (22-7) used a strong starting pitching performance and timely hitting to dispatch the Lexington Legends (12-19) 6-5 on Monday night at Municipal Stadium. With the win the Suns improved their record at home this season to 12-4.

Starting LHP Hector Silvestre (1-0) held the Legends hitless and scoreless for the five innings he worked on Monday to earn the win. The only base runner Silvestre allowed was a walk he issued in the fourth. Starting LHP Matt Tenuta (2-3) suffered the loss for Lexington. He gave up four earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out one in five innings.

Hagerstown jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Center fielder Isaac Ballou led off with an infield single and stole second. He scored from second on a one-out single by 1B James Yezzo. A walk by LF Estarlin Martinez followed, and both Yezzo and Martinez stole third and second respectively to put two in scoring position. Third baseman John Wooten brought both runners home with a single to center field to finish off the scoring in the frame.

A solo homerun by catcher Austin Chubb led off the bottom of the fifth inning and put the Suns ahead 4-0. However, the Legends answered with a long ball of their own in the top of the sixth. With two out and two on 3B Michael Antonio launched a ball over the center field wall to make it a one-run game.

The Suns responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Martinez doubled to begin the half-inning. He scored on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt laid down by DH Wilman Rodriguez. The second run of the frame came around on a sacrifice fly by SS Willie Medina.

Lexington came back with a run each in the eighth and ninth, but that still left them one run shy of tying it up. LHP Jake Walsh recorded his third save of the year, going two innings and allowing two earned runs on two hits and one walk.

After a day off on Tuesday, the Suns next head to Hickory, NC to begin a four game series with the Hickory Crawdads (14-15) on Wednesday May 7. The Suns will send RHP Austin Voth (0-2) to the mound for his sixth start and appearance of the year. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00pm.
