Today's Preview: The Intimidators (A, White Sox) play for a series split against the HIckory Crawdads (A, Rangers) and send Robinson Leyer to the mound against Hickory's Collin Wiles in today's series finale. Kannapolis currently leads the season-series over Hickory, 5-4, thanks to a narrow win Sunday behind the strong arm of Tyler Danish. Kannapolis won its first two series against Hickory in 2014.
Intimidating Starter: Robinson Leyer, 21, makes his sixth of the season and second against Hickory. He is coming off his first win in 2014 after limiting West Virginia to a run on seven hits over 5.1 innings on April 30. After opening his season with a pair of rough outings, Leyer has settled down in his last three starts, going 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA (3 ER/15 IP), striking out 12 and walking seven along the way. This is his first appearance against the Power. The younger brother of former Intimidator Euclides Leyer (who is currently with High-A Winston-Salem), Robinson spent 2013 with Advanced Rookie Bristol, going 2-7 with a 6.35 ERA over 13 starts. Leyer made 13 starts in his professional debut in 2012 with the DSL White Sox, going 1-4 with a 3.12 ERA in 13 starts. He turned 21 this week.
Hickory's Hurler: Collin Wiles, 19, makes his second start of the season and fourth appearance against Kannapolis. The sandwich round selection (53rd overall) in the June 2012 First-Year Player Draft made a start against the Intimidators in the second game of an April 15 doubleheader, lasting just 2/3 of an inning, allowing four runs on three hits. Wiles worked 4.0 innings of scoreless relief against Kannapolis on April 9 and pitched a scoreless relief inning in the first game of this series on May 2. After making his professional debut in 2012, the Rangers farmhand spent 2013 with Short-A Spokane, going 2-7 with a 3.09 ERA in 14 games (14 starts).
About Last Night:Tyler Danish spun 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit, as the Intimidators edged the Crawdads, 3-1, on Sunday. He struck out five and walked two en route to his third win in six starts. Trey Michalczewski drove in Cleuluis Rondon in the first for a 1-0 lead, and Carl Thomore and Omar Narvaez added a pair of runs off reliever Ricardo Rodriguez, who walked two batters in the fifth inning to set up the additional runs. Hickory's Cole Wiper gave up a run over 3.2 innings in taking the loss.
Danish Throwing Cheese: Tyler Danish worked 6.0 scoreless innings for the second straight start on Sunday against Hickory, lowing his ERA 0.84 (3 ER/32 IP), second best in the South Atlantic League behind Charleston's Caleb Smith's 0.66 ERA (2 ER/27.1 IP). Danish improving to 3-0 on the year and is one of five qualifying pitchers with a 1.000 winning percentage. He ranks fifth in the league with a 1.00 WHIP and fifth among starters in batting average against at .205 (24-117). The White Sox picked Danish in the second round (55th overall) of the June 2013 draft.
Louisville Stealer: Adam Engel swiped his league-leading 15th base on Sunday. The former Louisville stand out was also caught stealing, moving him into a tie for the league lead in times caught stealing. While Engel did not cross the plate on Sunday, he continues to pace the Sally League in runs scored with 24.
Hayes on base for days: Danny Hayes went 1-2 with two walks on Sunday to extend his on-base streak to 21 games since April 11. The Intimidators first baseman now has the third-longest streak in the SAL this season and second-longest active (Asheville's Michael Benjamin has reached base in 24 straight games since April 5). Hayes is batting .329 (23-70) with an on-base percentage of .443 during this streak. It's the longest on-base streak by an Intimidators player since Adam Heisler reached base in 28 straight Sally League games (April 4 to Aug. 19, 2013) during a season in which he also spent time with the Class A-Advanced Winston Salem Dash and Triple-A Charlotte Knights.
31 Flavors: Intimidators Trey Michalczewski and Cleuluis Rondon went into Sunday with a share of the league lead for games played at 29 and each played their 30th game of the season, however West Virginia's Erich Weiss played both games of the Power's doubleheader on Sunday. As a result, Weiss now leads the league in games played with 31. Michalczewski and Rondon are now tied with three other players for the second-most games played in the SAL this season with 30.
Roster Moves: Today the Intimidators transferred activated a pair of players off the disabled list. RHP Francellis Montas, who made five starts for Kannapolis in 2013 after being acquired from the Red Sox as part of the Jake Peavy trade, has been activated and promoted to Winston-Salem. Montas will start for the Dash tonight against Myrtle Beach. Catcher Zach Fisher has bee activated and transferred to Extended Spring Training.
Broadcast: Today's game will be broadcast live on IntimidatorsBaseball.com beginning at 6:50 p.m. Josh Feldman will broadcast all 70 home games and select road games in 2014. Next week's games at Lakewood and Hagerstown will be carried by the Intimidators.
