BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (April 9, 2013) - Worcester goaltender Alex Stalock made 32 saves to earn the shutout as the Sharks blanked the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 3-0 at Webster Bank Arena on Tuesday night. With the win, the Sharks improve to 30-31-3-6. The Sound Tigers fall to 30-30-6-5.
Worcester dictated much of the play in the first 20 minutes and took a 1-0 lead with 4:45 left in the first period. The Sound Tigers were unable to clear their zone, and Derek Joslin sent a shot from the left point that made its way through traffic past Sound Tigers goaltender Rick DiPietro to give the Sharks a one-goal advantage.
The Sharks continued to capitalize on disjointed play in the Bridgeport zone, and doubled their lead just 1:51 into the middle frame. Riley Brace found himself all alone in front of DiPietro, and deflected Nick Petrecki's point shot into the net for his second goal in as many games to increase Worcester's lead to two.
Matt Nieto gave the Sharks a 3-0 lead at the 19:05 mark of the middle frame. Dylan Demelo chipped a puck off of the glass in the neutral zone behind Matt Donovan, and Nieto chased it down and fired off of DiPietro's glove and in for his second goal of the season.
The Sound Tigers upped their play in the third period, outshooting the Sharks 17-6 and earning scoring chances, but Stalock made big saves to keep the puck out of the Worcester net. The Sound Tigers appeared to have scored when Stalock slid into his net with the puck midway through the third period, but the referee ruled a Sound Tiger had pushed Stalock into the net. Both Aaron Ness and Matt Donovan also hit iron in the third period, but couldn't solve Stalock as he earned the shutout.
The Sound Tigers return to action this Friday night when they visit the Syracuse Crunch at 7:30 p.m.
NOTES: Rick DiPietro made his eighth straight start in net and made 25 saves in the loss as his record moves to 8-7-0 ... Scott Mayfield made his pro debut after signing an entry-level contract with the Islanders last week and signing an ATO through the end of this season ... Matt Donovan registered seven penalty minutes, including a fight with Taylor Doherty, as his PIMs total increased to 106 ... Tuesday night marked the first time the Sound Tigers had been shut out at home in the regular season since a 5-0 loss to Manchester on Feb. 26 2011 ... Jon Landry was a healthy scratch, missing just his second game this season; Donovan wore the "A" in his place.
