Harrisburg Senators News Release

Harrisburg, PA - The Harrisburg Senators had a doubleheader split snatched out of their hands as they fell to the Altoona Curve, 4-3 in Game 1 and 6-5 in Game 2. The losses push Harrisburg 4.5 games behind Bowie for the second and final playoff spot in the Eastern League's Southern Division.

In Game 1, the Curve plated a run in the top of the 1st. Jim Negrych hit a two-out double and Jamie Romak followed with an RBI single to make it 1-0.

The Senators scored runs in each of the first three innings. In the 1st, Ofilio Castro nailed a two-out RBI single to tie the game. In the 2nd, Ian Desmond drew a leadoff walk and stole second. He scored two batters later on a double by Javi Herrera to give the Senators a 2-1 lead. In the 3rd, Seth Bynum and Bill Rhinehart slapped back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners and Castro grounded into a double play to plate a run and make it 3-1. The Senators were retired in order after that, as the Curve sat down the next 14 straight hitters.

The Curve tightened it up in the top of the 4th when Angel Gonzalez ripped a two-out RBI single to make it 3-2. In the 5th, Romak sliced a two-run double into the right-field corner to give Altoona a 4-3 lead they would not surrender.

RHP Steve Schmoll (2-3) took the loss in relief for Harrisburg. RHP Christian Castorri picked up his first Double-A win of the season to move to 1-2. LHP Josh Shortslef notched his third save of the year.

In the nightcap, the Senators grabbed the lead on a solo homer in the bottom of the 2nd by Marvin Lowrance. The Curve tied the game at 1-1 on an RBI double by Shelby Ford.

The Senators took the lead back in the bottom of the 4th. Devin Ivany ripped an RBI single to center to make it a 2-1 Harrisburg lead.

The Curve retook the advantage in an ugly top of the 5th. Melvin Dorta hit a leadoff single and Ford walked. Jonel Pacheco followed by hitting a ground ball to short which was nearly a double play, but the relay throw was errant and Dorta scored from second to tie it at 2-2. After a strikeout, Brad Corley hit what looked to be an inning-ending groundout, but the ball was bobbled and the error allowed another run to score and make it a 3-2 Altoona lead.

In the 6th, Milver Reyes drew a leadoff walk, was bunted to second and scored two batters later on an RBI fielder's choice to extend the margin to 4-2.

The Senators rallied in the bottom of the 6th to take the lead. Lowrance drew a one-out walk and moved to third when Ivany drilled a double to left-center. Garrett Guzman followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to make it a 4-3 game. Marco Yepez slapped a two-out, game-tying RBI single to left-center to plate Ivany and knot the score at 4-4. Seth Bynum was summoned from the bench and delivered a run-scoring single to right to give Harrisburg a 5-4 lead.

In the top of the 7th, Altoona was down to its final strike, but Jason Bowers blooped an RBI triple in front of a diving right-fielder to tie the game at 5-5. James Boone followed with an RBI single to center to make it a 6-5 Curve lead.

RHP Adam Carr was saddled with the loss to even his record at 2-2. RHP Blair Johnson won his first decision of the year. RHP Ronald Belisario notched his 7th save.

The Senators fell to 64-55. Altoona upped its record to 54-66.

(MORE) The Senators and Curve continue the five-game series Friday at 6:35 PM. Harrisburg sends RHP Zack Segovia (1-0, 7.63 ERA) to the mound against Altoona RHP Yoslan Herrera (5-8, 3.11 ERA).
