Chesapeake Baysox News Release

(Bowie, MD) - The Baysox spotted the Rock Cats an early three-run lead before coming back with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to snatch a 7-5 victory Thursday night. Brad Bergesen lasted just 2.1 innings and allowed five runs on six hits before turning things over to the bullpen. Felix Romero came on to finish off the third inning and dominated the Rock Cats lineup, retiring all eleven batters he faced while striking out seven, including a string of five in a row.

Bergesen is not used to short outings, as he is in the midst of a career season. He was not discouraged tonight, "The ball was up a little bit today and they took advantage of it. There's not a whole lot you can do about it I kinda felt helpless on the mound tonight. It happens to everyone so you can't dwell on it. You have to throw your hands up and just try to come back better the next start."

The Baysox got on the board with two runs in their first turn at bat. Sebastien Boucher led off the game with a base hit to right field and Carlos Rojas ripped a double down the left field line to put runners on second and third. Nolan Reimold drove a double into the gap in left-center to score both runners and give Bowie an early 2-0 lead.

The Rock Cats came right back with three runs in the top of the second. David Winfree led off with a single to right field and Bergesen got Dustin Martin on strikes. Felix Molina picked up a base hit to right field to put runners on first and second for Matt Moses. Moses hit a single to right to drive Winfree in to score. Drew Butera drilled a double to straightaway center field that brought Molina and Moses home to give the Rock Cats a 3-2 lead.

New Britain added two more in the top of the third when Brock Peterson led off with a double to right-center field. Peterson moved to third base on a wild pitch by Bergesen before David Winfree struck out. Dustin Martin crushed a two-run homerun over the wall in right to make the score 5-2 New Britain.

Romero came on to finish the inning for Bergesen and started a string of 17 straight batters retired by the Baysox bullpen. Romero was pleased with his effort, "I feel real good. I was trying to get ahead early in the count and use my fastball a lot. When they put me in I was trying to keep the game close because I know we have a good team, good hitting, so I knew we could come back. I think this was one my best performances this year, all my pitches were working tonight."

The Baysox did their damage in the bottom of the fifth. Carlos Rojas led off with a double down the left field line and Nolan Reimold pulled a base hit into left field to move Rojas to third. Matt Wieters stroked a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Rojas and cut the Rock Cats lead to 5-3. Ryan Finan drew a walk and Steve Torrealba flew out for the second out. Jeff Nettles hit a double down the left field line to score Reimold to cut the lead to one run. Jonathan Tucker came up and delivered the big blow, a three-run homerun to left field to give the Baysox a 7-5 lead.

Tucker felt the homerun right off the bat, "It was my third at bat so I'd pretty much seen what he could throw. He was throwing a lot of off speed stuff, wasn't throwing hard. I was just looking for something to put a good swing on, not for any particular pitch but just a pitch to hit. I don't hit a lot of homeruns, so sometimes when I hit one I can tell it's going. This one I had a feeling it was going out."

Gerardo Casadiego combined with Julio Manon to pitch the final three innings, each striking out two batters in perfect fashion. Manon worked the ninth and earned his 26th save of the year.

With the victory, the Baysox improve to 69-51, second place in the Southern Division. The Baysox look to make it three in a row Friday night as RHP David Hernandez (6-4, 2.60 ERA) goes up against LHP Ryan Mullins (7-8, 4.56 ERA).
