Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- The Defenders and Sea Dogs were slated to play two games in one day, but only completed one due to heavy rain and lightning. Connecticut won the first contest 7-2 and were left scoreless in the last of the fourth for game two.
Game one of the double-dip was a resumption of a game suspended in the bottom of the fourth on July 23. At the time of the stoppage of play, Connecticut trailed 2-1 with the bases full and two outs and Portland at the plate.
When the game resumed on Thursday, a new pitcher had taken over for the Defs. The vicarious situation was inherited by lefty Paul Oseguera and he threw well out of the gate. In a bases loaded jam, Oseguera induced a groundball to the first baseman to end the threat and the inning.
Oseguera continued to pitch well through the middle innings as the Defenders' offense woke up from their slumber. In the last of the seventh, Ryan Rohlinger started things off with a double, Dave Maroul singled him home, and Antoan Richardson knocked a base hit to right field to put Maroul on third. Kyle Haines followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, Olmo Rosario tripled Richardson to the plate and Sosa punched a sac fly of his own to plate Rosario as Connecticut took a 5-2 lead.
With Oseguera done, Jason Waddell took over the pitching duties. Waddell struck out the side in the eighth after Connecticut scored twice in the top half of the frame to make it 7-2, Defenders.
Waddell would stay in the contest as he closed shop on a 7-2 win. Oseguera earned his second win with the Defenders and Sea Dog starter Daniel Haigwood lost his third.
Thirty minutes later, Connecticut and Portland started what was supposed to be slated as a seven-inning game. Joey Martinez opposed Kris Johnson for three and a half innings but the rain washed away any chance of completed the game. With the game scoreless and one away in the bottom of the fourth, the game was suspended.
Connecticut and Portland will resume the scoreless affair on Friday night at 5:05pm. Shortly thereafter, the two teams will play another seven-inning game. Tickets are available for the twinbill at www.ctdefenders.com or by calling the box office at (860) 887-7962.
