SeaWolves Clobber Phillies. 15-3

Josh Rainwater allowed a run through eight innings and becomes Erie's first nine-game winner as the 'Wolves connect on season-highs in both runs scored and hits in a 15-3 win over Reading.

The SeaWolves jumped out ahead in the top of the first inning against Reading starter Tyson Brummett. With one out, James Skelton and Wilkin Ramirez connected on back-to-back singles. Casper Wells then singled home Skelton for a 1-0 lead. With Ryan Roberson batting, a wild pitch brought home Ramirez for a 2-0 lead. Roberson then connected on a two-run home run over the wall in center, his 21st, for a 4-0 ‘Wolves lead. Deik Scram followed and would connect on a solo homer over the wall in right for his 11th. The back-to-back homers gave Erie a 5-0 lead.

In the top of the third with two outs, the ‘Wolves would take a 6-0 lead when Caonabo Cosme connected on an opposite field solo home run, his second of the year.

In the top of the fourth, Erie would continue to add to the lead. With two outs, Wells and Roberson both singled for their second hits of the game. Scram walked to load the bases for Jeff Frazier. Frazier singled home both Wells and Roberson for an 8-0 lead.

The ‘Wolves would take a commanding lead in the top of the fifth against reliever Pat Overholt. Cosme led off with a double and that was followed by back-to-back walks by Will Rhymes and Skelton to load the bases. With one out, Wells singled for his third hit of the game, driving home Rhymes for a 9-0 lead. With two outs, Scram stepped in and connected on his second home run of the game, a grand slam, putting Erie up 13-0. The grand slam was Erie's fourth of the season and the second against the Phillies.

The Phils got on the scoreboard in the seventh against Rainwater. Jeremy Slayden led off with a double and he scored on a two-out double by Mike Eylward to make it 13-1.

In the top of the ninth, the SeaWolves would add two more runs. Wells led off with a double, his fourth hit of the game. It was also the third four-hit game for Wells on the season. He moved over to third on a fly out to right Roberson. Scram then walked for the second time in the game to put runners on the corners for Frazier. Frazier came up with his third RBI in the game on a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Wells for a 14-1 lead. De Leon singled to move Scram into scoring position for Cosme. Cosme doubled to the wall in left for his fifth hit of the game, scoring Scram, capping a 15-run, 20 hit night for the ‘Wolves. Cosme joins Danny Worth with five hit games on the season.

The Phillies scored two in the bottom of the ninth against reliever Brendan Wise but could not get any closer as the ‘Wolves won the game 15-3. The 12-run margin of victory was also the largest of the season for the SeaWolves.

Rainwater (9-5) went eight innings, allowing a run on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts en route to his ninth win of the season. It was the second win for Rainwater against Reading in as many outings. He had a string of 13.2 scoreless innings against Reading until the Phils scored in the seventh. Rainwater is now 3-1 in his last four starts.

NOTE -

The last time Erie scored 15 runs in a game happened twice during the 2005 season. The first time was 4/26/05 vs. Altoona in a 15-11 win and the second was less than a week later when the club downed Binghamton 15-6 on 5/1/05.
