Published on April 8, 2023 under Eastern League (EL)
Erie SeaWolves News Release
It took extra innings but the Erie SeaWolves took down the Akron RubberDucks on their way to a 3-2, 11-inning win.
Ty Madden was the star in the first half of the game. Detroit's #5 prospect mowed down 10 RubberDucks in four hitless innings. Madden allowed one baserunner, a third inning walk.
Colt Keith's sacrifice fly started the scoring in the third inning, bringing home Diego Rincones.
Billy Lescher entered for Madden in the fifth inning and surrendered a two-out, run-scoring, infield single off the bat of Connor Kokx, tying the game.
Erie had opportunities to take the lead in regulation. Trei Cruz twice doubled off the fence in right-center field, including an eighth-inning double that barely missed leaving the park.
In extras, Cruz tallied the go-ahead run in the 10th on an RBI groundout. Austin Bergner was on for the save in the bottom half. He struck out the first two batters, keeping the free runner anchored at second base. However, he uncorked a wild pitch to Michael Berglund. It caromed back to Josh Crouch, who threw to third base to try to throw out free runner Gabriel Rodriguez. The throw was wild, allowing Rodriguez to score, tying the game at two. In the 11th, Crouch came up as the hero with an RBI single, scoring Keith. Bergner worked around traffic in the bottom half to finish the ballgame.
Bergner (1-0) picked up the win. Bradley Hanner (0-1) took the loss.
Erie is back in action for the home opener at UPMC Park on Tuesday against Altoona. Start time is 6:05 p.m.
