Chesapeake Baysox News Release

ERIE, Penn. - Baysox Starter Steve Johnson and the Bowie Baysox were undone by three longballs as they fell to the Erie SeaWolves 5-3 Monday night. The loss was Bowie's second in a row as they dropped to 9-3, but held on to first place in the Western Division by half a game. Erie has now won three straight after starting the season 0-8.

Johnson dropped to 0-1 (3.21 ERA) after the game, while Erie lefty Jon Kibler picked up the win and moved to 1-2 (2.00 ERA).

Wilkin Ramirez's solo home run to left in the first inning was the first run charged to Johnson all year. He retired the next seven batters before giving up another solo shot to SeaWolves left fielder Andy Dirks to open up the bottom of the third inning.

The third inning would prove to be a long one for Johnson. Ramirez picked up his second hit of the night before right fielder Deik Scram crushed Erie's third home run to push the SeaWolves lead to 4-0. Johnson gave up another single in the inning before recording a strikeout andt a double play to get out of the inning.

The SeaWolves tallied one more run off Johnson in the fourth inning with a two-out double by Ramirez that plated Justin Henry. Johnson left the mound after the fourth as Zach Clark took over in relief.

The Baysox began a spirited comeback in the fifth inning, with singles by outfielder Joel Guzman and catcher Caleb Joseph down the left and right field lines. Both runners advanced to scoring position after second baseman Ryan Adams grounded out; Guzman scored as Pedro Florimon reached first base on an error. Paco Figueroa hit a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Joseph to score from third, but the inning ended when Erie got a second out from the play after Florimon failed to tag-up.

Center fielder Miguel Abreu added another run with a home run to right field to lead off the sixth inning that made it 5-3. Third baseman Brandon Waring followed with a double, but was stranded at second base as Robbie Widlansky grounded out to the pitcher and Guzman struck out.

Waring's hit was the last real offense the Baysox would muster. Luis Marte came in to relieve Kibler at the start the eighth inning and slammed the door with two hitless innings to record his first save of the year.

The Baysox hope to get back to their winning ways Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. for game two in Erie. They head back to Bowie on April 22 for a home stand against the Akron Aeros and the SeaWolves. Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 23 will feature the Baysox signature spectacular fireworks show presented by Educational Systems Federal Credit Union.
