Perez Named Eastern League Pitcher Of Week
April 19, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- New Hampshire Fisher Cats left-handed pitcher Luis Perez has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Sunday, April 18. The Fisher Cats' southpaw has started the season masterfully, posting a 2-0 record and a 0.53 ERA in three appearances, covering 17 innings.
In his season debut on April 8 in New Britain, the 25-year-old native came out of the bullpen and retired all nine batters he faced, including five strikeouts.
Perez made his first start of the season on April 13, recording the victory by tossing seven strong innings of one-hit baseball in a 5-2 win at Reading.
The Guayubin, Dominican Republic native didn't disappointment the crowd at Merchantsauto.com stadium on April 18 in his home debut against Binghamton, the EL's top offensive club. Perez stretched his scoreless-innings streak to 15.1 before his no-hit bid and shutout possibility were erased when he surrendered a solo home run with one out in the sixth inning; however, the 6'0", 205-pound secured the 3-1 triumph, handing the ball over after seven one-hit innings, fanning three.
Perez started his professional career in the Dominican Summer League and was honored with the R. Howard Webster Award after going 4-0 with a 1.38 ERA in 2006. Perez then made 16 starts for the Auburn Doubledays (Short Season-A) in 2007, before spending the entire 2008 schedule with the Lansing Lugnuts (Class-A), totaling 137 strikeouts in 137.1 innings. Manchester was introduced to Perez in 2009, where he made 27 starts for the Fisher Cats, finishing fourth in the Eastern League in strikeouts (112), second in the league in innings pitched (162.1) and tied for the team lead in wins (9). Perez was both an EL Mid-Season All-Star, and he pitched for the World Team in the XM Satellite Radio All-Star Futures Game in July.
The Fisher Cats will open a three-game series against the Trenton Thunder at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Monday, April 19, at 6:35 p.m. Tonight the Fisher Cats will be hosting the U.S. Cellular Most Improved Student Night, and fans can play USA Subs Baseball Bingo.
