TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and New Britain Rock Cats will meet in game one of a three-game series...The Flying Squirrels fell short of a series sweep in a 5-2 loss to the Reading Phillies Sunday afternoon at The Diamond.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Left-hander Clayton Tanner gets the start in game one of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Suffered the loss in his last outing 4/14 at Altoona...Gave up three runs and five hits in five innings...Struck out five and walked one...Three of five hits went for extra bases including a Hector Gimenez leadoff home run in the bottom of the second inning a Josh Harrison double (scored) in the second and a Matt Hague RBI double in the bottom of the third...Third run scored on a squeeze bunt by Jose De Los Santos...Retired the leadoff batter in four of his five innings on the mound...Recorded nine ground outs, and one fly out to go along with his five strikeouts...Lone fly out was the first out of the game...Overall has recorded 22 ground outs, seven strikeouts and just two fly outs....Making his first start at home.
Right-hander Carlos Gutierrez gets the nod in game one of a three-game series...Gave up just one run on five hits over five innings in a no-decision against Portland...Struck out five and walked one...Allowed four runs on seven hits in just four innings of work on Opening Day...Struck out four and walked three but did not factor into the decision...New Britain is 0-2 in his two starts...Began last season with Advanced-A FTM...Went 2-3 with a 1.32 ERA in 11G/10GS and earned Florida State League mid season All-Star honors...33K/22BB in 54.2 IP...Appeared in 22G/6GS with Double-A NBR and went 1-3 with a 6.19 ERA...32K/24BB in 52.1 IP...Allowed 19ER in 24.1 IP in his 16 relief appearances...Gave up 17ER over 28.0 IP in his six starts...Selected by MIN in the first round (#27 overall) of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft...Attended the University of Miami.
STREAK SNAPPED: Richmond's three-game winning streak came to an end in yesterday's 5-2 loss to Reading...During the streak, the Flying Squirrels outscored the Phillies 9-2 and outhit them 22-17...Starting pitching allowed just one earned run during the course of the streak...Reading totaled 10 hits and scored four runs off of Richmond starter Mike MacDonald in its lone win of the series.
NOT SO SUNNY SIDE UP: The Flying Squirrels fell to 0-2 in day games with yesterday's 5-2 loss to the Reading Phillies...Of the club's four wins, two of the have come on Friday nights (2-0).
OUCH!: When Thomas Neal was hit in the head by a Vance Worley pitch leading off the bottom of the sixth inning, it marked the ninth time that a Flying Squirrel was hit by a pitch, most in the Eastern League...New Britain batters have been hit the second-most, six times...Brandon Crawford has been plunked three times, also tops in the league.
DIAMOND DEFENSE: The Flying Squirrels are tied for the Eastern League lead in fielding percentage at .989...The club has made just five errors through the first 11 games, second-fewest in the 12-team circuit...Portland has committed four errors through 10 games.
ST. NICK: Nick Noonan has hits in five straight games after yesterday's 1-for-4 performance...The 20-year-old is 5-for-17 (.294) with three doubles, a RBI, and a run scored...He leads the team in doubles with five which also puts him in a six-way tie for second in the Eastern League...Noonan entered the season rated as the #11 prospect in the Giants organization after hitting .259 with seven homers and 64 RBI in 124 games with Advanced-A San Jose in 2009.
CATCH OF THE DAY: Richmond catcher Jackson Williams has hits in each of his first eight games this season...The 23-year-old is 10-for-25 (.400) at the plate with three doubles, a home run, and two RBI...He leads the team and is third in the Eastern League in batting average...Williams hit just .223 in 105 games with Connecticut last season and is a career .217 hitter in 244 professional games...The Oklahoma product has also thrown out 50% of would-be base stealers (4-for-8), tops in the Eastern League.
HORSESHOES AND HAND GRENADES: All 11 games for the Flying Squirrels this season have been decided by three runs or less..A save has been recorded for the victorious team in 10 of the 11...The average margin of victory/defeat is 2.2 runs (24R/11G).
CFS STAT OF THE NIGHT: When Reading scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning, it was the first time in 30 innings that Richmond trailed...The Flying Squirrels led in 24 of 30 innings...The other six innings the score was tied 0-0.
PURITAN CLEANERS DIRTY SQUIRREL: Nick Noonan was named the "Dirty Squirrel of the Game" Sunday afternoon after going 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored...He also contributed five assists on the infield.
