Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs and the Maine Children's Cancer Program officially kicked off the 2010 TD Bank Strike Out Cancer in Kids campaign today with a media home run derby held at Hadlock Field. The event raised $2,845.00 dollars for the Maine Children's Cancer Program.
Today's event marked the official start to fundraising effort of the 2010 TD Bank Strike Out Cancer in Kids Program. Media members, sponsors, Sea Dogs pitchers and coaches, and supporters of the program were each allowed three hits, depending on how far the hit went, the Sea Dogs donated a pre determined amount of money. A hit past the pitchers mound was $20, reaching the outfield on the ground was $30, outfield in the air $40, warning track $75, off the wall $100, and a home run $500. There was a three way tie for first place with Mike Hildreth from TD Bank, Matt Rogers from the Maine Children's Cancer program Board of Directors, and Dave Guthro from WMTW News 8 each raising $120.00.
The TD Bank Strike Out Cancer in Kids Program raises money for the Maine Children's Cancer Program. For every strikeout thrown by a Sea Dogs pitcher, money is generously donated by numerous businesses and individuals with TD Bank leading the way with $10.00 per strikeout. The program has raised a remarkable 3.9 million dollars in the program's 16 year history. The Sea Dogs and the Maine Children's Cancer program expect to celebrate the 4 million dollar milestone later this season.
The Strike Out Cancer in Kids Program was developed in 1995 when the Portland Sea Dogs and Peoples Heritage Bank teamed together to combine their resources to support a community activity to enrich the quality of life in Maine. Together they created the season long fundraising activity for the Maine Children's Cancer Program, in which people pledge any amount of money for each Portland Sea Dogs' pitcher strikeout. Through the years the program has evolved into the largest fundraising program for the Maine Children's Cancer Program, raising around $300,000 annually.
