Eastern League Hands out Pitcher-Player Of The Week Awards

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the week ending April 18th :
Binghamton Mets first baseman Nick Evans has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending April 18th . The 24-year old is off to an outstanding start for the B-Mets this season, batting .372 (16-for-43) with four doubles, three home runs, 11 runs scored, 10 RBI, five walks and a .674 slugging percentage over 10 games. Evans, who is currently a member of the New York Mets 40-man roster, has reached base in each of the 10 games he has played in this season and has multiple hits in six of those games, including going 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and three RBI in a 7-4 win over the Erie SeaWolves last Monday night at NYSEG Stadium. The 6'2-Â, 220 lb. slugger currently leads the league in hits (16), runs scored (11) and total bases (29), is tied for second in home runs (3), RBI (10) and extra -base hits (7), is ranked third in slugging percentage (.674) and fourth in batting average (.372) and OPS (1.103). Nick, who has combined to hit .301 with 17 home runs, 68 runs scored and 62 RBI in 100 games with Binghamton during the 2008 and 2009 seasons, was selected by the New York Mets in the fifth round of the 2004 draft out of St. Mary's High School in Phoenix, Arizona.
Luis Perez, a left -handed starting pitcher for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, is the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 18th . The 6'0-Â, 160 lb. southpaw has appeared in three games for the Fisher Cats this season and has posted a record of 2-0 with a 0.53 ERA over 17 innings pitched. The 25-year old made his first appearance of the season for the Fisher Cats out of the bullpen and earned a hold in a 5-4 opening day win against the New Britain Rock Cats after striking out five batters in three shutout innings of relief. The Guayubin, Dominican Republic native got his first start of the season last Tuesday night at Reading and gave up just one hit and two walks in seven shutout innings of work to pick up his first victory of the season. Perez, who is a member of the Blue Jays 40-man roster, also earned the win in his second start of the season, surrendering one run on one hit and four walks while striking out three batters in seven innings in a 3-1 win over Binghamton on Sunday afternoon at New Hampshire. Luis, who currently leads the league in innings pitched (17) and batting average against (.039) and is tied for first in wins (2), was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays as a non-drafted free agent on July 30, 2003.
