June 16, 2010 - Eastern League (EL1)
Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 9-3 win over the Portland Sea Dogs on Wednesday night at Hadlock Field.
Erie jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning against Portland starter Alex Wilson. Andy Dirks led off the game and reached on an infield single and Cale Iorg followed with a two-run home run to center, his fourth, for a 2-0 Erie lead. Michael Bertram followed the home run with a walk. He moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a passed ball. Bertram scored on a groundout by Ben Johnson to make it 3-0.
In the second, the âWolves added a pair. Andy Bouchie led off with a single and with one out, Dirks connected on a two-run home run, his eighth, over the wall in right-center for a 5-0 lead.
The Howlers kept coming in the third. Johnson led off with a single and was tripled home by Deik Scram to make it 6-0. The triple was his third on the season and second in as many games. Audy Ciriaco then singled to center, scoring Scram for a 7-0 lead.
In the sixth, Bouchie led off with a single and moved to third on a double by Justin Henry. Bouchie scored on a groundout by Dirks to make it 8-0.
The lead would be plenty for Thad Weber who stifled the Sea Dogs bats through seven. Weber, for the second straight outing against Portland, did not allow an earned run. He allowed six hits with a walk and five strikeouts in seven shutout. Weber has not allowed an earned run in his last 15 innings pitched.
Erie added a run in the ninth on a Josh Burrus pinch-hit home run, his seventh, for a 9-0 lead.
The Sea Dogs plated three in the bottom of the ninth against reliever Luis Marte but could get no closer as the âWolves went on for the 9-3 victory.
Weber (4-7) earned his first win against a team other than Bowie. He has worked at least five innings in every start and at least 6.2 innings in eight of his last nine.
The âWolves and Sea Dogs play the rubber game of the three-game series on Thursday night at Hadlock Field. Righty Brooks Brown (3-4, 4.43 ERA) takes the mound for the âWolves against RHP Jeremy Kehrt (1-1, 1.71 ERA).
Erie looks for its first series win since taking two of three in Richmond May 18-20.
