Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Binghamton Mets racked up 18 hits and nine unanswered runs as they clobbered the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 11-2, in front of 4,097 on Wednesday night at The Diamond.
The Squirrels got started quickly when Darren Ford led off the first inning with a single off of Binghamton right-hander Josh Stinson. He stole second on the next pitch and came in two batters later when Roger Kieschnick singled back through the box.
Squirrels' right-hander Mike MacDonald shook off a comebacker off his thigh in the first inning and fended off the B-Mets through the first three frames. However, he walked Marshall Hubbard to start the fourth inning. Eric Campbell followed and drilled a two-run homer to left field on MacDonald's first pitch for a 2-0 Binghamton lead.
An inning-opening error on Binghamton second baseman Justin Satin opened the door for the Squirrels response in the fifth. The error allowed Tyler La Torre to reach, and he moved to second when Stinson followed with a walk to MacDonald. The pair was bunted to second and third by Ford and Nick Noonan tied the game, 2-2, with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The B-Mets broke back on top in the sixth and signaled the beginning of the end for Richmond. Binghamton posted three runs in three consecutive runs. The first two runs in the sixth were charged to MacDonald, who departed to the loss in the midst of the sixth inning. He dropped his sixth decision on the season as the Squirrels fell to 1-12 on the season in his starts. MacDonald was charged with four earned runs on 10 hits over five innings.
A two-run home run from Omir Santos highlighted a three-run seventh inning for the B-Mets, and three Richmond errors in the eighth inning helped plate three more to cap the scoring.
Stinson (4-1) was the winner, working seven innings for his longest out of the season. He surrendered just two runs on five hits, walked two and struck out four.
Every starter in the Binghamton lineup recorded at least one hit as the B-Mets posted the most hits against Richmond in a single game this season. The 11 runs also matched the high-water mark for the year.
The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Thursday night at The Diamond. RHP Felix Romero (0-0, 5.40) will make the start for Richmond against LHP Eric Niesen (1-3, 3.49) for Binghamton.
