SeaWolves Rally past RubberDucks
July 16, 2019 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron RubberDucks third baseman Nolan Jones came within a double of the cycle to help build a 4-1 lead, but the Erie SeaWolves rallied, and right fielder Derek Hill hit a seventh-inning, game-tying home run and ninth-inning, walk-off single to give Erie a 5-4 win in the series opener at UPMC Park in Erie on Monday night.
Turning Point
With a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning, Erie second baseman Kody Eaves hit a leadoff single to right-center field off left-hander Kyle Nelson (1-4). Catcher Chace Numata doubled to left field, putting runners at second and third base. Right-hander Dalbert Siri entered to face Hill, who grounded the game-winning single through the left side of the infield.
Mound Presence
In his Eastern League debut, RubberDucks right-hander Chih-Wei Hu took the mound with a lead and retired the first six batters he faced. With a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, he allowed a leadoff solo home run to left fielder Cam Gibson. He walked Numata with one out and departed after the second out for right-hander Jordan Stephens, who allowed a single and walk to load the bases before ending the inning with a 2-1 lead. Stephens went 2 1/3 scoreless innings, before left-hander Ben Krauth went 2 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits - including two home runs - to tie the game, 4-4. Nelson struck out two batters to strand runners at first and third base and end the eighth inning. For Erie, right-hander Alex Faedo allowed four runs in five innings, right-hander Logan Shore pitched three scoreless innings, and right-hander Nolan Blackwood (5-2) pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Duck Tales
The RubberDucks took a first-inning lead against Erie right-hander Alex Faedo. Jones singled down the third-base line, right fielder Trenton Brooks walked, and left fielder Connor Marabell hit an RBI single to center field, scoring Jones. Jones hit a third-inning home run - his first in Double-A - and a fifth-inning RBI triple that made it 4-1.
