Erie SeaWolves News Release

The SeaWolves used three pitchers and shut out the Portland Sea Dogs in the rubber game of a three-game set at Jerry Uht Park on Thursday night.

The ‘Wolves struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Danny Worth doubled with two outs and scored on a Deik Scram liner to right.

Erie again lit up the scoreboard with some two-out thunder in the bottom of the fourth. Max St. Pierre walked with one out. With two outs, Kody Kirkland tripled off the wall in right, scoring St. Pierre, giving Erie a 2-0 lead. The triple for Kirkland was his third and second in as many nights.

In the bottom of the sixth, Jeff Frazier led off with a single. Frazier has now hit safely in 15 of his last 17 games. The next hitter, Justin Justice, connected on a two-run home run over the wall in right, giving the ‘Wolves a 4-0 advantage. St. Pierre and Caonabo Cosme followed the homer with back-to-back singles putting runners on the corners for Kirkland. Kirkland flew out to center and on the play, the throw to the plate from centerfielder Bubba Bell skipped in front of the catcher John Otness and went to the backstop allowing St. Pierre to score, putting Erie up 5-0.

The five runs would be plenty as Josh Rainwater (5-2) dealt through 6.2 innings. He allowed just four hits with a walk with six strikeouts. The six punchouts tied a season-high which he has now done for the fourth time and the second time in as many starts. Rainwater is Erie's first five-game winner and he is 3-0 in three starts since returning from the disabled list. It was also the first time in nine starts where Rainwater did not allow a run.

Juan Cedeno tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief and Casey Fien tossed a scoreless ninth to preserve the shutout.

The shutout was Erie's fourth on the season and the club's first at Jerry Uht Park. The win also gives the ‘Wolves a season series split with Portland (3-3). Erie also leads the all-time series against the Sea Dogs 34-32.
