
'Dogs drop second straight to Erie

(Erie, PA) - Josh Rainwater (5-2) and two Erie relievers combined on a 7-hit shutout as the SeaWolves (28-35) grabbed the series finale from the Portland Sea Dogs (37-28), 5-0 on Thursday night at Jerry Uht Park. Erie wins the series, taking two of three from Portland. The two clubs split the season series at three games apiece.
Kyle Jackson (3-1) made his second start of the season and suffered the loss for Portland. The righty tossed five innings, allowing four hits, two runs on two walks and three strikeouts.
Rainwater hurled 6 and 2/3 innings, scattering four hits on one walk and six strikeouts to earn the win. Juan Cedeno pitched 1 and 1/3 innings and Casey Fien wrapped up the victory with a scoreless ninth.
Portland went 1-for-5 with runners-in-scoring position and went 2-for-15 during their two losses in the series.
The SeaWolves scored their first two runs of the game with two outs. Deik Scram had a run-scoring single in the third inning, scoring Danny Worth. In the fourth, Kody Kirkland tagged a two-out RBI double off the right-field wall. Erie scored three runs off Chad Rhoades in the sixth inning. Justin Justice smacked a two-run homer and Max St. Pierre scored on a throwing error by centerfielder Bubba Bell.
Portland had the lead runner reach base in only two innings with only one runner reaching third. Bubba Bell and Andrew Pinckney paced the 7-hit attack by going 2-for-4. John Otness extended his hitting streak to 9-games with a double in the second.
Daniel Bard fired two perfect innings for the Sea Dogs in relief of Rhoades. The radar gun registered Bard's fastball at 97 to 99.
The Sea Dogs open up a 3-game series on Friday night at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio against the Aeros. RHP Michael Bowden (5-3, 2.30) makes his 14th start of the season for Portland. LHP Chuck Lofgren (1-3, 6.04) gets the starting nod for Akron. Notes...Kyle Jackson suffered his first loss of the season but has an ERA of 2.00 in two starts...Aaron Bates ended an 0-for-12 slump with a single in the ninth inning...Portland is 4-11 against the Southern Division.
