Chesapeake Baysox News Release
(Reading, PA) - The Baysox pulled out another hard fought victory over the Phillies, 6-2 Thursday night with the help of Jeff Nettles' 14th homerun of the year. Chris Tillman went six strong innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out eight. Reading starter Antonio Bastardo was solid as well, giving up three runs on three hits over six innings. Nettle's homerun came to lead off the top of the second inning and put Bowie ahead, but Mike Eylward wasted little time answering and hit a solo shot of his own to lead off the bottom of the inning and tie the game at 1-1.
Reading was able to pull ahead in the bottom of the fifth. Eylward led off with a double into left-center field and came in to score when Neil Seller's ground ball got under Carlos Rojas' glove and into right field. Tillman got out of the inning with no further damage, but the Phillies went up, 2-1.
The Baysox came back in the top of the sixth with some help from the Reading defense. With the bases empty and one out, Lou Montanez hit a dribbler in front of the plate and catcher Lou Marson rushed his throw to first, allowing Montanez to reach. With two outs and Montanez on first, Nolan Reimold and Steve Torrealba drew walks to load the bases. Mike Rodriguez smacked a line drive toward the gap in left-center and speedy center fielder Greg Golson got a glove on it but could not haul it in. Montanez and Reimold came in to score easily and Torrealba was thrown out at the plate to end the inning, but Bowie took the lead, 3-2.
Ryan Keefer came in and shut down the Reading offense, giving up just one hit over three innings of work to earn his first save of the year. The Baysox added some insurance for the Keefer in the top of the ninth. Steve Torrealba led off with a walk and with one out Brian Peterson drew another walk. Blake Davis crushed a line drive over Golson's head in center, bringing in Torrealba. With one out and runners on the corners, Jonathan Tucker drew a walk to load the bases and Carlos Rojas followed with a walk of his own, plating Peterson and making the score 5-2. The Baysox pushed one more run across as Blake Davis scored on Lou Montanez's ground out, and Keefer shut the door on Reading in the bottom of the inning, putting the Phillies away 6-2.
With the victory, the Baysox are now 39-26, one game ahead of the Akron Aeros for first place in the Southern Division. Nettle's 14 homeruns lead the Southern Division. The Baysox hope to keep rolling when they come home Friday to face the Harrisburg Senators. RHP Jason Berken (4-2, 4.86 ERA) will start Friday's game for Bowie against Harrisburg's RHP Jordan Zimmermann (1-1, 3.73 ERA).
The Bowie Baysox are in their 16th season as the "AA" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Baysox individual game tickets,
