June 12, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

TRENTON, NJ- The Defenders finished a three-game series sweep against the top-dwelling Thunder on Thursday night as they blanked Trenton for the second straight game, 3-0.

Connecticut emphatically grabbed the lead in the first inning as Travis Ishikawa jacked a two-run bomb as the Defs enjoyed an early 2-0 advantage.

The Defenders kept the ball rolling in the second when Dave Maroul homered to lead off the frame to push the lead to 3-0.

Meanwhile, Joey Martinez was dealing on the hill for the visiting Defenders. Despite allowing a base hit in all five innings of work, Martinez escaped each and every time. After his day was done, he had given up no earned runs, five hits, two free passes and struck out four. This was Martinez's second straight outing on the current road-trip where he hasn't allowed a run.

Justin Hedrick toed the rubber next and he looked sharp as well. In his two innings, he allowed no runs on two base hits, walked none and struck out no one.

Kelvin Pichardo took the ball next and threw two smooth innings of his own as the Defenders closed the glove on a 3-0 victory. The shutout win was the largest such win for Connecticut in 2008. It was also the very first time the Defenders shutout their opponent in consecutive games.

The Defenders will travel home to face off against the Altoona Curve for a three-game set over the weekend. Tickets are available for Friday the 13th at the ballpark on ctdefenders.com or by dialing the ticket office at (860) 887-7962.
