Lance Monych's pair of goals, including one with just 42 seconds remaining in regulation, weren't enough as Columbia held on for it's first-ever win in regulation against the Mississippi Sea Wolves by a score of 3-2.
Mac Faulkner got Columbia on the board at 8:57 of the first period when he broke down the ice shorthanded, went to the backhand, and beat Sea Wolves goaltender Ryan Munce for his ninth goal of the season. The Sea Wolves tied the game at the 13:32 mark when Lance Monych took a pass from Marek Kvapil and buried the puck behind Columbia's Todd Ford on a wraparound. The Inferno regained the lead when Owen Fussey picked up the rebound of Brad Ralph's shot at 16:35.
Columbia would increase their lead to 3-1 when Jeremy Hall tapped in Jeff Miles' centering pass at 15:29 of the second period.
The Sea Wolves threatened to tie the game after pulling Munce in favor of an extra attacker with 90 seconds remaining in the third period. Lance Monych found the puck in a massive goalmouth frenzy and tapped it past Ford to draw the Sea Wolves within one with 42 seconds remaining. Mississippi continued to threaten, but failed to score to tie the game before time expired.
The Mississippi power play was 0-for-7, and Ryan Munce made 26 saves, earning the loss.
Saturday, February 16 @ South Carolina, 2-6 L
The Mississippi Sea Wolves concluded a six-game road swing on Saturday evening, losing 6-2 to the South Carolina Stingrays at the North Charleston Coliseum in North Charleston, South Carolina.
Ryan Menei got Mississippi on the board first, notching his 13th goal of the season when the rebound of Jason Tejchma's shot landed on the blade of his stick and he fired it past South Carolina netminder Josh Johnson's glove at 9:33 of the first period. Cail MacLean notched his first of the game for South Carolina at 16:12, chipping in a power-play goal to even the score at one apiece.
MacLean gave South Carolina a 2-1 lead when he took a pass from Trent Campbell behind the net and snuck a wraparound past Sea Wolves goalie Ryan Munce at 4:25 of the second stanza. Lance Monych drew Mississippi even again with a power play goal at 9:33. Travis Morin scored the game winner shorthanded for South Carolina, streaking down the right wing and beating Munce with a wrist shot at 14:23 of the second.
Chris Chaput, Nate Kiser, and Trent Campbell each added insurance goals for the Stingrays in the third period.
